Good evening, I found the following sentence on a blog: "During my internship I was assigned with various tasks". Well, I am absolutely sure that it is correct but a doubt have arisen in my mind: is it possibile to substitute "with" with "to" or not putting a preposition at all? If no, could you explain to me the right usage of the three constructions? Thank you in advance.

@Glenfarclas thank you very much !! But.. is it still wrong if the sentence was "I was assigned with a variety of tasks?"

You could also say use "to" but the emphasis shifts. I was assigned various tasks = Various tasks were assigned to me. I was assigned to various tasks = I was put to work at various tasks.

Correct, because you are not assigned to a task. You may be assigned to a department or a project. You are assigned a task or tasks (to do).

What about this sentence, "I was assigned AS a sales manager last year." Is this correct?

If you mean that you were appointed to the position of sales manager, then no. But it might work in a special context: I was temporarily assigned to our Vienna office as sales manager until their usual manager returns from maternity leave.

Object.assign()

The Object.assign() static method copies all enumerable own properties from one or more source objects to a target object . It returns the modified target object.

The target object — what to apply the sources' properties to, which is returned after it is modified.

The source object(s) — objects containing the properties you want to apply.

Return value

The target object.

Description

Properties in the target object are overwritten by properties in the sources if they have the same key . Later sources' properties overwrite earlier ones.

The Object.assign() method only copies enumerable and own properties from a source object to a target object. It uses [[Get]] on the source and [[Set]] on the target, so it will invoke getters and setters . Therefore it assigns properties, versus copying or defining new properties. This may make it unsuitable for merging new properties into a prototype if the merge sources contain getters.

For copying property definitions (including their enumerability) into prototypes, use Object.getOwnPropertyDescriptor() and Object.defineProperty() instead.

Both String and Symbol properties are copied.

In case of an error, for example if a property is non-writable, a TypeError is raised, and the target object is changed if any properties are added before the error is raised.

Note: Object.assign() does not throw on null or undefined sources.

Cloning an object

Warning for deep clone.

For deep cloning , we need to use alternatives like structuredClone() , because Object.assign() copies property values.

If the source value is a reference to an object, it only copies the reference value.

Merging objects

Merging objects with same properties.

The properties are overwritten by other objects that have the same properties later in the parameters order.

Copying symbol-typed properties

Properties on the prototype chain and non-enumerable properties cannot be copied, primitives will be wrapped to objects, exceptions will interrupt the ongoing copying task, copying accessors, specifications, browser compatibility.

The Reds make first moves of the spring, assign 12 players to minors

assign on or to

GOODYEAR, Ariz. –– The Cincinnati Reds made their first set of roster moves of the spring on Thursday, reassigning 12 players to minor league camp. The group mostly consists of prospects without much experience in the upper levels of the minor leagues.

The Reds reassigned pitchers Rhett Lowder, Julian Aguiar, Jacob Heatherly, Chase Petty, Reiver Sanmartin and Zach Maxwell, catchers Mat Nelson, Michael Trautwein and Daniel Vellojín, infielders Edwin Arroyo and Tyler Callihan and outfielder Blake Dunn.

Lowder, the Reds’ top pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, established his identity as a pitcher who commands four impact pitches, works quickly and pitches with a lot of poise on the mound.

“When you’re in a rhythm, you want to stay in that rhythm,” Lowder said. “It’s something they preached in college. Staying at an upbeat tempo works in my favor.”Arroyo, 20 years old, looks like a big league ready defender. He’s still developing as a hitter and as an athlete. The Reds were impressed with the foundation for his approach at the plate. He stands very far back in the batter’s box, showcased a good eye and elevated a few high fly balls that had a lot of carry on them. He has the potential to develop into a good gap-to-gap hitter.

“I’m using the entire field,” Arroyo said. “I can be a power hitter and try to pull the ball all the time, but that won’t work for me as well as other guys. For me, I’ve got to use the whole field and I’ll be good. My stance is a way I feel like I can see the ball better. Using the stance and being early with my timing, I’ve always hit that way.”

When Maxwell is throwing strikes, he puts on a show. He still hasn’t pitched above High-A, but Maxwell has a chance to make his big league debut this year. If Maxwell develops a better feel for his 100 mph fastball, turns his “gyro cutter slider” into a consistent pitch and stays poised in high-leverage moments, then the 6-foot-6, 293-pound right-hander has the potential to be an impact setup reliever.

“I’ve embraced being bigger and using that energy to blow peoples’ doors off,” Maxwell said. “Just being bigger really helps. I learned my slider on my own. The grip’s mine. I throw it as hard as I can right over the plate and hope something good happens. I call it a hard gyro cutter slider going down. But as long as hitters don’t get to it, I don’t care what they call it.”

Sanmartin, who was on last year’s Opening Day roster, is recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Brandon Williamson takes a step forward

Reds starting pitcher Brandon Williamson turned up the dial in his third appearance of the spring. He spent his previous outing working on his slider. On Wednesday in a split-squad game against the Milwaukee Brewers, Williamson used a more game-like approach.

In four innings, he allowed one run on four hits.

“My arm feels good, and now it’s about getting some velocity back,” Williamson said. “All of my off speed pitches are moving how I want them to. I’m able to pitch and move stuff around how I want.”

Williamson’s best pitch was his curveball. He was working on his slider last week as a way to slow hitters down with an off speed pitch, but Williamson’s curveball on Wednesday looked like a pitch that could consistently create that effect.

Reds spring training Matt McLain Following a terrific rookie year, the Reds have even higher expectations for Matt McLain

Reds spring training news Reds starter Nick Lodolo takes his biggest positive step of spring training

“When I’m throwing that for strikes, it opens up a lot of doors for me,” Williamson said. “Not that it’s Craig Kimbrel’s curveball, but it’s definitely that important to my game.”

Tyler Stephenson starts heating up at the plate

Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson didn’t have a hit in the first week of spring training games. Now, over his last two games, he has two homers. Stephenson hit another homer on Wednesday in a split-squad game against the San Diego Padres.

“He’s looking good,” Reds manager David Bell said. “It was just a matter of time. It’s nice to see him drive the ball.”

Also in that game against the Padres, Reds starting pitcher Graham Ashcraft allowed two runs in three innings. First baseman Christian Encarnacion-Strand homered for his second straight game, and shortstop Elly De La Cruz singled, drew two walks and stole three bases.

County leader sues NY over order to rescind ban on transgender athletes

  • Published: Mar. 07, 2024, 1:00 p.m.
  • The Associated Press

Mineola, N.Y. — A Republican official has asked a federal court to affirm his decision to ban girls’ and women’s sports teams with transgender athletes from using county facilities in New York City’s suburbs.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman filed the lawsuit days after the state’s Democratic attorney general, Letitia James, warned him in a “cease and desist” letter that the ban clearly violated New York’s anti-discrimination laws.

In filing the lawsuit, Blakeman doubled down on an executive order he signed on Feb. 22 that covers more than 100 sites in the densely populated county next to New York City, including ballfields, basketball and tennis courts, swimming pools and ice rinks.

The order requires any teams, leagues or organizations seeking a permit from the county’s parks and recreation department to “expressly designate” whether they are for male, female or coed athletes.

Any teams designated as “female” would be denied permits if they allow transgender athletes to participate, the order said. The ban doesn’t apply to men’s teams with transgender athletes.

During a news conference Wednesday, Blakeman said the intent of the ban is to protect the “right to equal opportunities in athletics” to those assigned female at birth, as well as their “right to a safe playing field.” He said girls and women in contact sports might get injured if they are forced to compete against transgender women.

“The reason why we set forth this policy was because of the unfair competitive advantage that males have. They’re bigger, faster and stronger. It’s a scientific fact,” Blakeman said, as he was joined by a local 16-year-old volleyball player and her parents, who are also plaintiffs in the lawsuit.

Proponents and opponents of restrictions on transgender athletes point to a limited number of studies to support their viewpoints. Supporters of restrictions also often assert that the participation of transgender women encroaches on the space that the federal law known as Title IX carved out for cisgender women and girls.

James’ office on Wednesday echoed earlier statements calling the order “transphobic and discriminatory.”

On Friday, James threatened legal action if Blakeman didn’t rescind the order in a week. Among other things, she said it would subject women’s and girls sports teams to “intrusive and invasive questioning.”

The executive order followed scores of bills enacted in Republican-governed states over the past few years banning gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors, barring transgender girls and women from girls and women’s sports teams, banning drag performances, and other similar measures.

Blakeman said no teams or organizations have yet applied for a permit under the new order as licensing for seasonal sporting events is just ramping up. He also said he is not aware of any local teams trying to field transgender athletes in female sports.

In any case, Blakeman argued, the order does not outright ban transgender individuals from participating in any sports at county facilities, as transgender female athletes will still be able to play on male or co-ed teams.

“Transgender athletes have many avenues to compete,” he said. “So we’re not precluding anyone. We’re not denying anybody.”

Nassau’s county-run facilities include the more than 900-acre Eisenhower Park that is home to the training facility for the NHL’s New York Islanders as well as an Aquatic Center that has regularly hosted the swimming and diving championships for the NCAA’s Big East Conference.

Islanders officials didn’t respond to messages seeking comment Wednesday. But Big East spokesperson John Paquette said the conference has made no decision about its future plans despite having held its finals at the East Meadow venue six of the last nine years.

The Big East’s policies for transgender athletes, he added, follow those of the NCAA , which, in turn, are based on the policies of the national or international governing bodies of each individual sport.

LGBTQ groups, meanwhile, are skeptical of the legal arguments put forward in Blakeman’s lawsuit.

Time and again, federal judges have found blanket bans on transgender athletes likely violate the very same equal protection clause Blakeman invokes, said Sarah Warbelow, a vice president at the Human Rights Campaign.

Among the recent examples are judicial rulings in lawsuits challenging transgender restrictions imposed in Idaho and West Virginia, the organization said.

David Kilmnick, president of the LGBT Network, a Long Island-based advocacy group, said the 14th Amendment has also come into play in transgender workplace discrimination cases, including that of Vandy Beth Glenn, who was fired from her job with the Georgia General Assembly after announcing she intended to transition from male to female.

“Courts have recognized that discrimination against transgender individuals often constitutes discrimination based on sex, which is prohibited by the 14th Amendment,” he said. “These rulings have affirmed that transgender individuals are entitled to the same legal protections against discrimination as everyone else.”

Florida public schools could make use of chaplains under bill going to DeSantis

  • Associated Press

TALLAHASSEE — Florida school districts could opt to allow volunteer chaplains in schools under a bill the Legislature sent to Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis over the objections of opponents who argued that religion should be kept out of schools.

Supporters argued the legislation will provide another resource for children and pointed to chaplains who serve in other government roles, such as police or military chaplains. The Legislature also hosts a chaplain of the day when it’s in session, and there’s a nondenominational chapel in the state Capitol.

“It does surprise me about the controversy because we have had chaplains in our public institutions for centuries,” said Republican Erin Grall, who sponsored the bill. “I just get frustrated when we talk about that we should exclude all religions in school.”

But opponents said children could receive bad or unwanted spiritual advice or feel uncomfortable because they may not share the same religious beliefs.

The only requirements of a chaplain participating in a school program would be a background check and having their name and religious affiliation listed on the school website. The chaplains would “provide support, services, and programs to students as assigned by the district school board,” the bill reads.

Schools would have to publish online the names and religions of chaplains picked to participate in the program, and parents would have to give permission before children could meet with them.

Still, opponents said there’s no place for chaplains in schools, especially when there’s no requirement that they be trained in psychology or to work with children.

“The minute that you try to put your religion upon other people, that’s when it becomes a problem, and as a member of a minority religion, I feel it every day and it makes me so uncomfortable,” said Democratic Sen. Tina Polsky, who is Jewish. “To me, religion is something you choose to do with your family after school.”
