- How to Start a Dog Daycare or Dog Boarding Business in India
There are 19.5 million pet dogs in India as per a report tabulated in 2018.The pet dog population is expected to rise to 31 million by end of the year 2023. Pet ownership traits have increased tremendously even in these times of pandemic. The pet boarding and grooming industry is also all set to take a major chunk out of the pet market as more people who own dogs or cats look for facilities that can care for their beloved pet while they are away. In India, the number of dog kennel businesses keeps increasing by the day as more people seek comfort and companion of pets, especially dogs. This industry is also proving to be a major employment opportunity for people in India.
It’s a known fact for all businesses that marketing plays an essential role in growing the business. The same is applied to the Dog Boarding Business too. Very frankly, marketing is a costly affair, and it’s time consuming too. The fact is that my clients are spending more and more money on client acquisition – some of which say that the cost has gone as high as 45% in comparison to last 3–4 years.
And then many of the inquiries that I get are on how to market a dog boarding business on a tight budget. Dog boarding is a service which allows owners to drop their dogs off for a certain period of time by paying a fee.
All segments of Indian pet industry —food, accessories, toys, boarding, grooming and breeding—are witnessing an exponential growth. Reports show that the market is growing 14 per cent annually and is expected to be worth 630 million in 2023.The growth potential in the pet industry has opened up several business opportunities, dog boarding being one such option.
What is Dog Boarding
Dog boarding , also known as Dog daycare , is a service which allows owners to drop their dogs off for a certain period of time by paying a fee. In the boarding facility, dogs are fed, walked, and cared for by the staff, who make sure that the dogs remain healthy and happy.
Some dog boarding facilities also offer additional services such as pet day care meant for those owners who need care for their pets while they are at work or otherwise engaged. You can also set up a salon and swimming pool in the boarding to attract more customers looking for recreational activities for their dogs.
Dogs are amongst the top three most popular pets owned by individuals and families. People love to have a furry companion by their side as they are friendly and can co-habit perfectly with humans, as well as provide security.
But, owning a dog is a hefty task as they require one’s complete attention. You cannot leave a dog alone at home and this poses a great problem for working professionals. Hence, many animal lovers refrain from having a dog even if they want to. It is due to this fact that services like dog daycare, dog boarding are emerging.
Owing to people’s renewed interest in adopting pets, the popularity of dog daycare businesses has skyrocketed. But venturing into a dog daycare is no walk in the park. If you are a dog lover and want to earn handsome profits by taking care & cuddling these furry animals, read on to know how to start a dog daycare.
It is often said that “Knowledge is Power.” If you want to start a dog daycare, remember that you will have to look after various dog breeds. Every breed has its own characteristics, temperament, food habits, canine first-aid, canine CPR etc. You will be required to have complete knowledge about almost every dog breeds and how to handle them.
Location & Property
Location is an important aspect of the success of any business. The most preferable location for your dog daycare would be a residential area which a good population of dogs. It should easily be accessible to dog parents so that they can easily drop off their dogs on their way to work.
Besides location, your dog day-care should also have enough space for the dogs to roam around and play, it should also have a fenced yard for them to play out in the grass. You can also build a play area and a small pool for them to enjoy.
Fun Facility
Dogs are active animals and love to play around. The most emerging trend in the dog-care industry is a cage-free facility. Dogs are grouped together according to their sizes in the majority of their time. Usually, puppies are kept separated from the adults. Your daycare should also have kennel areas for feeding the dogs separately or in the group in scheduled time.
Water needs to be freely available to the dogs so that they can stay hydrated while they play. Air conditioning is also an expected feature. One of the most sought after feature is live streaming webcams so that owners can log in and check on their dogs throughout the day.
Getting Started
To begin with, you will need a 3,000-3,500 sq ft land for the boarding as dogs need open area for playing. As for location, we suggest that you locate the boarding in near vicinity of residential areas that have maximum households with pets.
It would be better to lease a land which at least has a small office space constructed on it as constructing everything from the scratch can cost you a bomb. Once the area is finalized, next step is to set up and furnish the boarding. You will need to construct at least 6-7 rooms or iron cages for dogs and furnish them with a bed, food bowl, fan or maybe even an AC or cooler if you live in a city like Delhi.
After rooms, it is important that you set up a play area for dogs with toys, slides and maybe even a swimming pool. If you wish to offer grooming services as well, you can either take franchise of a popular dog salon brand or set up your own salon. Taking a franchise of a popular brand can help you get customers smoothly.
Investments Required
Setting up a dog boarding requires one-time heavy investment on setting up the facility. Furnishing and additional construction in the facility will cost INR 5.5-6 lakh. Setting up the play area will cost around INR 30,000-35,000. Add another INR 80,000-90,000 on utility deposits, building the website, permits and other miscellaneous costs.
As for operational costs, rent of a 3000 sq ft land will be upwards of INR 1.25 lakh per month. Electricity and water bills can amount to about INR 20,000 per month and grocery for dog’s food will be INR 9,000-12,000 per month. Next major chunk of your operating costs will be on staffing, which will be around INR 90,000 for 2 assistants and 2 people who will handle office work. Of course, if you handle the office work yourself, you can save on this cost to a great extent. Also, you may not have to hire more than one assistant in the beginning until you start getting 5-6 dogs for daily keeping. Next expense will be on marketing, which will cost INR 15,000-20,000 per month until you get enough repeat customers.
Your source of revenue will mainly be the fees charged to dog owners. Fees will vary as per the type of room, services provided and age of dog. Charge for overnight stay for a basic non-AC room ranges from INR 800-1000. This includes food and boarding. For a room with cooler in the same category you can charge around INR 1000, whereas a similar AC room can fetch you upto INR 1,200. If you provide pool services, you can add another INR 200-250 to the room charge. For a small puppy or an older dog who need exclusive attention, charges can be hiked by up to INR 200.
That’s about overnight boarding charges. For day care, charges will be lower at INR 600-700 for about 10 hours. Again, depending on the size, age and temperament of the dog, you can charge higher than the regular fees.
So to give you an idea of your earning, if you get around 100 overnight boarding bookings and 50-60 day care bookings, you can book a profit of 20-25 per cent from the total revenue. A word of caution here – it can take you 8-10 months to build a sizeable customer base.
Dog daycare business has huge potential, but you won’t be able to earn profits if you don’t advertise enough. You need to create awareness about your business to reach your potential customers. Promote your daycare business over the local magazine, newspaper, send out brochures and pamphlets. You can also put up your advertisement in your area’s veterinary clinics to reach easily to your target demographic. If you are able to offer the webcam facility, it should be heavily promoted in your advertising materials.
Here I have come up with a few of the Best Dog Boarding Business marketing ideas that any business can work on its own and gain customers and growth.

Get A Website And Promote It
One of the best things that can be done at the very first instance is to have a website. A website is something that is owned by the business and not any third-party app. It certainly is a long-lasting investment. A website is the very first thing to build if you want to promote the business digitally. It’s like an online gateway for the business. All of the contact information, FAQs, pricing, and more will always remain. Unfortunately, some of the pet biz owners still say why to invest in a website when social media, referrals, and networking are available absolutely free.
Get Booking Software
With a lot of dog related apps in the market, there are many opportunities for dog boarding businesses. Building an own app is the best way to get bookings from customers. The app will automate appointment bookings, keep all accounts, and build up a marketing database for future use. If building own app is an issue, apps like PetBaker will help showcase the services and generate revenue. Apart from the above app, there are many available on Android and iPhone market place.
Start Building An Email List
Many pet businesses are yet to realize the value of an email list. A simple monthly newsletter to customers on a regular basis helps brand loyalty, more sales, more engagement, and higher spending per customer. An email is the best of a personal and direct ways to reach out to customers, be it current or future. This email list is of the business, and no social media app can take it away as it does generally. Mailchimp is a free email sending website/app available and is really a great way to stay in touch.
Use Of Social Media Accounts
Social media is all about consistency. If great content is shared frequently on a consistent basis, change can be seen in some days. What happens is that gradually the number of followers grows and more and more people will be aware of the brand. As more they know about the business, more likely they are to be the customers. Try entertaining posts, educational posts, informative, and promotional posts regarding pet parenting, pet care etc. There is a lot to share, and everything should have a purpose.
Facebook Advertising
Believe me, Facebook advertising works really well for small pet businesses. If done with a strategy in mind, it’s light on pocket and has a very great ROI. The most important aspect of facebook advertising is that the business can pick and choose demographics of the people they want to see their ads. It’s like telling Facebook who your Target Audiences are, and then those ads will be shown only to the people chosen.
Start Blogging
Blogging is personally my way to go to the market. Every pet business should have a blog section on their website. Writing blog content is a great way to showcase that the business is a subject expert. A great blogging idea is to answer the most commonly asked questions, which are faced generally by the customers. Animal First Aid, ER, Food requirements are some other topics to consider to show potential customers the qualification of the business to take care of their pets.
Special Activities For The Pets
Celebrating pet birthdays, creating photo opportunities, hosting animal themed parties, pet fashion shows are some of the special activities, which a business can hold for its customers. Indian Pet Parents these days spend a huge amount of money on their pets. They actually need activities to make sure they are connected to their pets and it helps the business as Pet Parents actually adore these special things. These special activities actually help the business to a large extent to convert an inquiry into a customer.
Reward Existing And Loyal Customers
It is a well-known fact that most of the revenue generated is because of the old and returning customers. And the most important thing is that there is no need to spend to acquire them. Rewarding these loyal and returning customers helps to maintain a linear customer relation. Gifts, rewards, loyalty points are some ways that a business can show appreciation to returning and loyal customers.
Share Stories
Storytelling is anytime the best way to market. It’s a well-researched fact that customers easily get connected to the business via different stories. And the most important thing is that a story stands out in these days of ads popping out every now and then, every here and there. Some engaging story ideas are about the reason to be in business, the staff and their specialities, customer feedbacks, behind the scenes, etc. Showing your daily routine is another fantastic idea. Showcasing pets playing and having a happy time being away from their parents are sure to have engagement.
Marketing on various fronts is like going through trials and errors. Not all ideas mentioned above would work for a dog boarding business. It’s only after those ups and downs the business can conclude what works best for them. In marketing, consistency and visibility are key factors.
With all these ideas, now any dog boarding business can go to market with them and see their customers on a rise soon and in turn growth in the revenue.
7 Essential Steps to Starting a Doggy Daycare
Now that we’ve laid down a few foundational considerations, it’s time to get into the nitty-gritty of your planning process. Here are the essential steps to take to get your daycare business up and running:
- Create a business plan.
Your dog daycare business plan will be a blueprint for your business to present to prospective investors or use as a guiding document as you make strategic decisions. You can check out this guide for a full explanation of how to create a dog daycare business plan, but we’ll cover some of the highlights here.
As you create your business plan, you’ll go through the important process of examining the state of the dog daycare market in your local area, identifying key competitors, and figuring out how your business will serve an existing need to reach an untapped audience.
In this process, be sure to define your niche—your business’s unique offerings that customers won’t find anywhere else. For example, maybe you have the biggest puppy playground in town complete with a splash pad, or perhaps you offer training or grooming services to daycare customers. Defining and marketing your niche services will give your business a competitive edge and help you stand out and attract more customers.
In your business plan, fully describe your tactics for carving your own place in the market and getting your services in front of prospective customers. Having a well-structured strategy will give you a stronger argument if you choose to present your business plan to prospective investors.
- Choose a facility.
Once your business plan is complete, you’ll be ready to search for a home for your dog daycare business. In your search for the perfect facility, be sure to consider the following:
- Your budget: Ensure you stay in your price range in your hunt for a facility. You shouldn’t sink all your funds into your leasing or paying off your facility costs because you’ll have little to nothing left to spend on equipment or employee salaries.
- Your distance from your target customer base: You don’t want to be a significant distance away from your target market, or no one will want to use your services. Choose a facility that is conveniently located to where your customers reside.
- The amount of space you need: To run a proper dog daycare facility, you’ll need a lot of outdoor space to fit playground equipment for dogs to enjoy. Additionally, you’ll need lots of indoor space to store kennels and cages for overnight guests and have an indoor play area in case of inclement weather. Your final choice of location should have enough space for all dogs to lounge and play comfortably, and for your employees to carry out their duties as well.Find a space that can accommodate these considerations and also give you the room you need to grow. The more space you have, the more doggy daycare customers you can accommodate at once.
- Acquire equipment and pet business software.

Although you may choose to go above and beyond and offer special services, there are a few basic equipment pieces every dog daycare needs to be successful. Make sure you purchase the following items for your new business:
- Playground equipment
- Toys and balls
- Kennels and crates
- Food and water bowls
- Poop scoopers and bags
- Cleaning supplies
- First aid kits for dogs and employees
- Laundry supplies and a washer/dryer
Besides physical equipment, you’ll want to invest in quality dog daycare business software to help you manage the scheduling and client relationship aspects of your business. Dog daycare business software has many benefits:
- Saves time. You won’t have to spend endless hours rifling through client information or payment slips to find the information you need. All important data is kept in one centralized place.
- Manages schedules. You can book customer appointments as well as manage employee schedules from your software system.
- Helps retain customers. Through your dog daycare software, you can send messages to customers and provide updates on their pets throughout their stay at your facility.
- Facilitates marketing efforts. You can draft and send automated messages using your daycare software to keep your customers and prospective clients updated on business changes or upcoming promotions.
With the combination of top-quality equipment and an easy-to-use, convenient software system, you’ll be one step closer to opening your doors to furry friends.
- Hire dog daycare staff.
When thinking about hiring new employees for your dog daycare, you want to look for people who are dog lovers through and through. However, ensure they also have specific qualifications that will make them knowledgeable and dependable employees that add value to your business.
For example, search for prospective employees who have a baseline of training in canine first aid as well as some experience with caring for dogs in the past. Employees who have experience working with dogs can help create a safe environment for dogs from all backgrounds to mingle and play. You might even consider bringing on staff members with a wider range of experiences, including backgrounds in dog training or grooming, to give your business a unique service offering.
Last but not least, hire employees who are flexible and able to adapt to change. As your business grows, you want people on your team who can adapt to new processes quickly and effectively carry out your vision for your daycare.
- Evaluate behavior to keep pets and staff safe.
Create a process for conducting temperament tests for new canine clients. Temperament tests aren’t required by law, but they’re one of the best ways to ensure the dogs in your care, as well as you and your staff, can stay safe and avoid injuries or scuffles.
Steps for running dog temperament tests include interviewing pet parents, conducting evaluations and observations, and taking notes to reference while assigning dogs to playgroups. If a dog acts aggressive or displays behavioral issues at any point throughout the evaluation, stop the test and inform the owner that their dog isn’t a good fit for your daycare.
Also, train your staff to recognize and respond to changes in dog behavior. By observing changes in body language and recognizing signs of illness, employees can properly respond to various situations to keep dogs and themselves safe. Plus, customers will respect the care and attention you put in to make sure their pets stay safe, healthy, and happy.
- Market your dog daycare services to pet owners.
Once you’ve secured your facility, equipment, and staff, there’s one more piece of the puzzle to complete your dog daycare business: finding new customers! A comprehensive marketing strategy is key to connecting with prospective customers and earning their trust.
Take a multichannel approach to your marketing to ensure your target audience becomes aware of your business offerings without overwhelming on any one platform. Spread the word through:
- Social media: Create a business page for your doggy daycare on Facebook and Instagram and connect with other dog daycare businesses as well as dog owners in your area to start growing your following. Consider purchasing social media ads to promote your business directly to your target audience.
- Email: Start developing your email list by promoting your newsletter sign-up on your social media pages. Email is an effective way to reach customers directly and provide them an opportunity to respond and ask questions.
- Direct mail/flyers: Similarly, direct mailers or flyers reach your target audience directly because you can send materials right to certain addresses. Be sure to include your location, hours of operation, phone number, website, and social media handles on your mailers and flyers so people know how to reach you.
- Local radio/TV ads: If there’s room in your budget, you could consider taking out an ad spot on a local radio or TV station. Use the opportunity to introduce yourself and your staff to give your business a friendly face.
Ensure all your marketing materials are branded with your business’s logo and colors to leave your audience with a professional impression of your business. Also, lean into the playful aspect of your business. Just about everyone loves dogs and puppies, so show images or videos of puppy pals playing and having the time of their lives at your daycare to entice potential customers.
- Provide a great experience and watch your business grow.
By taking the necessary steps to create a plan for your business strategy and emphasizing safety at every step, your business will flourish. Remember that when times get tough, you can rely on your business plan to guide you through any rough patches.
Also, be sure to prioritize proper management practices and treat your staff with respect to create a positive, supportive culture within your business. Customers will note your upbeat attitude and be drawn toward the cheerful, fun environment you’ve created, and you’ll retain the support of your staff during times of change or challenges.

Over the past 20+ years, we have helped over 5,000 entrepreneurs and business owners create business plans to start and grow their doggie daycares. On this page, we will first give you some background information with regards to the importance of business planning. We will then go through a dog daycare business plan template step-by-step so you can create your plan today.

What Is a Business Plan?
A business plan provides a snapshot of your dog daycare business as it stands today, and lays out your growth plan for the next five years. It explains your business goals and your strategy for reaching them. It also includes market research to support your plans.
Why You Need a Business Plan

Source of Funding for Dog Daycare Centers
With regards to funding, the main sources of funding for a dog daycare are bank loans, personal savings, credit cards and angel investors. With regards to bank loans, banks will want to review your business plan and gain confidence that you will be able to repay your loan and interest. To acquire this confidence, the loan officer will not only want to confirm that your financials are reasonable. But they will want to see a professional plan. Such a plan will give them the confidence that you can successfully and professionally operate a business.
Another common form of funding for a dog daycare is angel investors. Angel investors are wealthy individuals who will write you a check. They will either take equity in return for their funding, or, like a bank, they will give you a loan. Venture capitalists will not fund a doggie daycare. They might consider funding a chain, but never an individual location. This is because most venture capitalists are looking for millions of dollars in return when they make an initial investment, and an individual location could never achieve such results.
Finish Your Business Plan Today!
Your business plan should include 10 sections as follows:
Executive Summary

The goal of your Executive Summary is to quickly engage the reader. Explain to them the type of dog daycare business you are operating and the status; for example, are you a startup, do you have a dog daycare that you would like to grow, or are you operating a chain of doggie daycare businesses.
Next, provide an overview of each of the subsequent sections of your plan. For example, give a brief overview of the dog daycare industry. Discuss the type of dog daycare you are operating. Detail your direct competitors. Give an overview of your target customers. Provide a snapshot of your marketing plan. Identify the key members of your team. And offer an overview of your financial plan.
Company Analysis
In your company analysis, you will detail the type of doggie daycare business you are operating.
For example, you might operate one of the following types:
- 100% cage-free : this type of doggy daycare allows dogs to freely roam the facility, under the supervision of a staff member.
- Cage-free play : this type of doggy daycare typically cages the dogs for a portion of the day, and allows dogs to play outside their cages at certain times.
- Kennel : this type of doggy daycare offers cages or runs where the dog remains for the entirety of the stay.
- Indoor-only doggy daycare : this type of dog daycare has indoor-only facilities, where dogs interact and play indoors, as well as relieving themselves in a designated indoor area.
- Indoor and outdoor doggy daycare : this type of dog daycare has both indoor and outdoor areas for dogs to enjoy.
- Extended-stay dog boarding : this type of doggy daycare provides care for an extended time while the owners are on vacation.
In addition to explaining the type of doggie daycare you operate, the Company Analysis section of your business plan needs to provide background on the business.
Include answers to question such as:
- When and why did you start the business?
- What milestones have you achieved to date? Milestones could include sales goals you’ve reached, new facility openings, etc.
- Your legal structure. Are you incorporated as an S-Corp? An LLC? A sole proprietorship? Explain your legal structure here.
Industry Analysis

While this may seem unnecessary, it serves multiple purposes.
First, researching the dog daycare industry educates you. It helps you understand the market in which you are operating.
Secondly, market research can improve your strategy particularly if your research identifies market trends. For example, if there was a trend towards 100% cage-free dog daycare, it would be helpful to ensure your plan calls for this accommodation.
The third reason for market research is to prove to readers that you are an expert in your industry. By conducting the research and presenting it in your plan, you achieve just that.
The following questions should be answered in the industry analysis section of your doggie daycare business plan:
- How big is the dog daycare business (in dollars)?
- Is the market declining or increasing?
- Who are the key competitors in the market?
- Who are the key suppliers in the market?
- What trends are affecting the industry?
- What is the industry’s growth forecast over the next 5 – 10 years?
- What is the relevant market size? That is, how big is the potential market for your dog daycare. You can extrapolate such a figure by assessing the size of the market in the entire country and then applying that figure to your local population.
Customer Analysis
The customer analysis section of your doggie daycare business plan must detail the customers you serve and/or expect to serve.
The following are examples of customer segments: pet owners aged 30 to 49; pet owners aged 50 to 64, etc.
As you can imagine, the customer segment(s) you choose will have a great impact on the type of doggie daycare you operate. Clearly baby boomers would want a different atmosphere, pricing and product options, and would respond to different marketing promotions than millennials.
Try to break out your target customers in terms of their demographic and psychographic profiles. With regards to demographics, include a discussion of the ages, genders, locations and income levels of the customers you seek to serve. Because most doggie daycares primarily serve customers living in their same city or town, such demographic information is easy to find on government websites.
If you plan to offer extended-stay dog boarding as well, you may want to consider segmenting customer behaviors as well. Local dog owners who are planning a vacation would be a targeted segment for marketing and advertising.
Psychographic profiles explain the wants and needs of your target customers. The more you can understand and define these needs, the better you will do in attracting and retaining your customers.

Competitive Analysis

Direct competitors are other doggie daycare businesses.
Indirect competitors are other options that customers have to purchase from you that aren’t direct competitors, such as dog walkers. You need to mention such competition to show you understand that not everyone who owns a dog uses a doggie daycare each day.
With regards to direct competition, you want to detail the other dog daycare centers with which you compete. Most likely, your direct competitors will be dog daycares located very close to your location.
For each such competitor, provide an overview of their businesses and document their strengths and weaknesses. Unless you once worked at your competitors’ businesses, it will be impossible to know everything about them. But you should be able to find out key things about them such as:
- What types of customers do they serve?
- What dog daycare services do they offer?
- What is their pricing (premium, low, etc.)?
- What are they good at?
- What are their weaknesses?
With regards to the last two questions, think about your answers from the customers’ perspective. And don’t be afraid to stand outside your competitors’ locations and ask customers as they leave what they like most and least about them.
The final part of your competitive analysis section is to document your areas of competitive advantage. For example:
- Will you provide superior dog daycare services?
- Will you provide doggie daycare services that your competitors don’t offer?
- Will you make it easier or faster for customers to use your services (e.g., reservations via a mobile app)?
- Will you provide better customer service?
- Will you offer better pricing?
Think about ways you will outperform your competition and document them in this section of your plan. This might include adding grooming services, boarding services, mobile-friendly services or other pet care services. Also, consider getting involved with your local animal shelters to build community involvement and spread the word about your dog daycare facility.
Marketing Plan

Product : in the product section you should reiterate the type of dog daycare that you documented in your Company Analysis. Then, detail the specific services you will be offering. For example, in addition to regular dog daycare, will you offer items such as premium food, a water park, one-on-one staff attention, grooming, etc.?
Price : Document the prices you will offer and how they compare to your competitors. Essentially in the product and price sub-sections of your marketing plan, you are presenting the services you offer and their prices.
Place : Place refers to the location of your dog daycare. Document your location and mention how the location will impact your success. For example, is your doggie daycare located next to a heavily populated office building, or gym, etc. Discuss how your location might provide a steady stream of customers.
Promotions : the final part of your dog daycare marketing plan is the promotions section. Here you will document how you will drive customers to your location(s). The following are some promotional methods you might consider:
- Making your dog daycare’s front store extra appealing to attract passing customers
- Advertising in local papers and magazines
- Reaching out to local bloggers and websites
- Partnerships with local organizations (e.g., pet store purchasers get a free day of dog daycare with each $100+ purchase)
- Social media marketing
- Local radio advertising
- Banner ads at local venues
Operations Plan
While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.
Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your dog daycare such as check-in, procuring supplies, keeping the facility clean, etc.
Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect to serve your 1,000th customer, or when you hope to reach $X in sales. It could also be when you expect to hire your Xth employee or launch a new location.
Management Team
To demonstrate your dog daycare’s ability to succeed as a business, a strong management team is essential. Highlight your key players’ backgrounds, emphasizing those skills and experiences that prove their ability to grow a company.
Ideally you and/or your team members have direct experience in the dog daycare business. If so, highlight this experience and expertise. But also highlight any experience that you think will help your business succeed.
If your team is lacking, consider assembling an advisory board. An advisory board would include 2 to 8 individuals who would act like mentors to your business. They would help answer questions and provide strategic guidance. If needed, look for advisory board members with experience in dog daycares and/or successfully running small businesses.
Financial Plan

Income Statement : an income statement is more commonly called a Profit and Loss statement or P&L. It shows your revenues and then subtracts your costs to show whether you turned a profit or not.
In developing your income statement, you need to devise assumptions. For example, will you serve 50 customers per day or 100? And will sales grow by 2% or 10% per year? As you can imagine, your choice of assumptions will greatly impact the financial forecasts for your business. As much as possible, conduct research to try to root your assumptions in reality.
Balance Sheets : While balance sheets include much information, to simplify them to the key items you need to know about, balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. For instance, if you spend $100,000 on building out your dog daycare, that will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a bank writes you a check for $100,000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.
Cash Flow Statement : Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and make sure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt.
In developing your Income Statement and Balance Sheets be sure to include several of the key costs needed in starting or growing a dog daycare:
- Location build-out including design fees, construction, etc.
- Cost of equipment like kennels, dog beds, activity centers, etc.
- Cost of food and treats and maintaining an adequate amount of supplies
- Payroll or salaries paid to staff
- Business insurance
- Taxes and permits
- Legal expenses
Attach your full financial projections in the appendix of your plan along with any supporting documents that make your plan more compelling. For example, you might include your facility design blueprint or location lease.

Dog Daycare Business Plan: The 2022 Getting Started Guide
BUSINESS | 3/13/20 2:30 AM | by Gingr
So, you’ve decided to start a doggy daycare. Maybe you’re a huge “dog person,” or maybe you’ve noticed a need in your community and are ready to fill that space with what will hopefully be a profitable venture.
Regardless of what’s landed you here, there are quite a few steps between choosing to open a dog daycare business and actually welcoming your first furry guest. This guide will provide an overview of everything you need to get started with your dog daycare business plan. After reading it, you’ll hopefully have a good foundation to begin brainstorming for your new venture.
While this guide dives into the basics, there’s still a decent amount of information to dive into. Feel free to navigate to a specific section of this guide if you know what you’re looking for. If not, continue reading to get started.
How to Start a Doggy Daycare: FAQs
How do you start a dog daycare business.
Before you begin accepting reservations and purchasing every dog toy you can get your hands on, there are a ton of business considerations to work through for your dog daycare.
Creating a dog business plan is the first place to start. In your business plan, you’ll define:
- An objective and mission for your business.
- Your cohesive brand and marketing strategy.
- Your competition and how you’ll stand out from the crowd.
- The facilities you’re going to utilize.
- How you’ll remain profitable, addressing costs and revenue.
You’ll need to decide where your business will be located, who you’ll be working with, which services you’ll offer, and which tools and software you need to offer those services. You’ll need to decide all of this— as well as how you’ll fund the venture overall— before actually putting any of these plans into action.
Do I need a license to start my dog daycare?
You will likely need specific licensing to start your dog daycare facility.
For starters, you’ll need to obtain the proper business licenses required of any start-up. While some businesses will need federal licenses (ex: restaurants selling alcohol), your doggy daycare licenses will probably be handled on the state and local levels.
Each state and locality handles this licensing differently, from which types of licenses are required to the requirements needed to fulfill such licenses. For example, some states require different permits and licenses for dog daycares versus dog kennels , with the key difference being dog kennels also house animals overnight. Other states might l have stricter zoning and size requirements for businesses looking after animals.
Because of that, your best bet is to contact your state and local licensing bodies for definite answers. While it might be frustrating digging into your region’s laws, remember these requirements are aimed at keeping the animals in your care as safe and healthy as possible.
How much can you earn owning a dog daycare?
When it comes to the earning potential of a dog daycare, the answer will vary depending on your specific circumstances.
There are a ton of factors that go into how much you can earn owning a dog daycare, including:
- The services you provide (daily dog care, grooming services, overnight care, etc.).
- How you price services.
- How money-savvy you are once operational.
- The need for such a business in your community.
Every aspect is unique to your personal situation, including your initial investment, the pricing of licenses and permits in your area, and even the cost of daily operations.
As you continue reading, you’re going to explore various profit equations. Use those equations to predict the daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly profitability of your dog daycare under certain estimated circumstances.
Profitability of a Dog Daycare Business: Key Considerations
While we’d love to say your dog daycare business can sustain itself on a love for dogs alone , that’s just not the case. To open your dream business and keep it open, you have to stay profitable throughout the process.
As you’ll see, this requires your revenue to outweigh your costs. This means the payments you’re receiving from customers have to (collectively) be more than the cost of providing those services. The costs include rent, staff wages, utilities, and dog-care specifics such as pet-care management software, animal-friendly cleaning products, dog treats and food, and any other costs of operation.
There are a ton of variables to juggle to ensure your dog daycare is profitable. Use the following equations and considerations to help make sense of it all.
The Profit Equation
No surprise here— but keeping the doors open to your doggy daycare requires keeping the business profitable overall. This requires ensuring your incoming revenue is higher than your outgoing costs, which is where the profit equation comes into play.

First, let’s look at a few key terms in this equation:
- Revenue: This refers to the price you’re charging for services multiplied by the number of services you deliver by that price. So, for example, if you charge $25 per day for daycare services, and care for 50 dogs on a given day, your revenue is $1,250 for that day.
- Variable Costs: This refers to the business operation costs that change day-to-day, varying with how busy you are at any given moment. This includes hourly staff wages, providing food to animals (if you do so for free), or cleaning services linked to the number of animals in your care at any moment.
- Fixed Costs: This refers to your operational costs that have little variation. For example, monthly rent and insurance payments are a fixed cost.
- X: The “X” refers to the unknown variable that affects how your revenue or variable costs are changed (multiplied) for the number of dogs in your care. So, how much revenue you’re making with X number of dogs and how high your variable costs are with X number of dogs.
Essentially, to successfully operate a doggy daycare, your profit has to be positive. This is a large overview calculation, and now we’ll break it down into more specific considerations.
Gross Profit
Gross profit refers to the profit your dog daycare business makes after you deduct the costs associated with providing your services. Specifically, this looks at the money you make with one particular transaction compared to the cost of providing that service.

Let’s define a few key terms:
- Revenue: In this equation, revenue refers to the profit brought in per dog cared for. For example, $25 for one dog, one day.
- Cost of Goods/Services Sold: This variable refers to the cost of providing dog daycare services for one dog. This includes hourly wages represented in that dog’s stay, the cost of receiving and processing payments, and any other costs related to managing one sale of your services.
This equation adds specificity to the original profit equation by telling you the profit your daycare makes from each and every dog in your care. Essentially, the equation gives you a variable profit multiplier— a number to multiply by the number of dogs in your care at any given time to calculate that day’s profit.
Net Operating Profit
Net operating profit expands upon the gross profit equation, adding fixed costs to your considerations. Rather than looking at one transaction (ex: one dog cared for on one day of operations), this equation looks at your total revenue and operating costs over a time period.

The goal of this equation is to see how much of your revenue will translate to profit. Because it is an equation looking at finances over time, it’s essential that you keep time units consistent across the board.
- Net Profit: This number is a representation of your gross profit (refer to the previous section) over time. Essentially, the net profit equation looks like this: Net Profit = (Gross Profit Per Dog x Number of Dogs) x Number of Days in Time Period
- Total Fixed Expenses: This represents your fixed costs across a time period. For example, $10,000 per month.
This is similar to the general profit equation from the first section. The key difference is that net operating profit combines the Revenue and Variable Costs sections into one overall Net Profit variable.
Pricing as Branding
While it’s essential that each of these equations results in a positive profit for your dog daycare to stay afloat, there are other important considerations to make when setting your business’s prices.
How you choose to price your services sends a strong message to your customers, and setting these limits too low (or high!) can give a negative first impression.
This pricing tells potential customers where your business lies in the market of doggy daycare services. If your pricing is too low, customers may fear you’re providing sub-par services to provide discount pricing. On the other hand, if your pricing is particularly high, you’ll have to make a strong case for the investment. If your pricing is too complicated , you’re likely to deter customers as well.
Many dog daycare businesses have found success in providing higher-quality service (for example, a lower dog-to-staff ratio) paired with a slightly higher price point. In that case, it’s essential that you support your pricing with a strong branding strategy, great first impressions, and a positive customer experience reputation.
If all of these equations and considerations seem a bit overwhelming, don’t fret— Gingr has put a lot of thought into dog daycare profitability. Check out our Doggy Daycare Profitability Model Spreadsheet to begin your profit analysis.
Elements of a Winning Dog Daycare Business Plan
A serious love for animals and a knowledge of profit equations aren’t enough to build and grow your future dog daycare business— there are a few other elements that are necessary for any successful dog kennel business plan.
With that, let’s explore the essential elements of a successful dog daycare business plan:
Define Your Brand
Dogs are often cherished as family members themselves, so for their human counterparts to feel comfortable leaving them in your care is a huge decision. Branding your dog daycare or kennel effectively is how you show these owners that you’re the right fit for their four-legged friend.
There are two steps to this— defining your brand and communicating that brand.
When defining your brand, consider what makes your dog daycare stand out from the others in your community. What makes you and your staff so passionate about caring for pets? What makes your approach to pet-care superior to others in your field?
For example, maybe your daycare specializes in providing care to senior dogs, centering your branding around a laid-back, relaxed atmosphere. Or, maybe your key selling point is the expertise of your staff, who have advanced experience in puppy etiquette and training. Find your key selling point and brand accordingly.
From there, it’s essential that this brand is consistent across all communications you have with potential and current customers. Your facility itself, your website, your social network profiles, and any advertisements and direct communications you send out should convey this consistent branding.
Know Your Competition
This is where you get into the nitty-gritty of what makes your doggy daycare better than others in your community. We know that competition is increasing in the dog daycare realm, both in more traditional daycare settings and newer home pet-care camera technology.
Research other local facilities and popular options to ensure you’re offering features that make you stand out from the crowd. Some ways to truly make your mark as the premier dog daycare facility in your community are:
- Set competitive pricing compared to others in your area providing similar services. Don’t make the mistake of setting your pricing significantly higher or lower than your competition, as you’ll stand out for all of the wrong reasons.
- Offer a peek into your operations. Streaming video from inside your facility (ex: in a dog play yard) and sending home a doggy report card reassure owners that your daycare is a safe, fun space for their pets.
- Leverage convenient, customer-oriented software tools. Manage your operations using software made for dog daycare businesses, with convenient online booking and payment, one-click check-in, and easily managed recurring services.
If branding is the key to making customers feel emotionally comfortable sending their dogs to your daycare, standing out from your competition is the key to making them logically comfortable.
Choose the Right Facilities
To successfully open a dog daycare or kennel, you also have to invest in superb facilities. Choosing your space is often a balance of two desires:
- Having enough space (and maybe even built-out facilities) to provide the best care possible to your customers.
- Being within your budget to not diminish the profitability of your business overall.
Because choosing a facility is an investment, you’ll want to really do your research before settling into one location.
Remember that each state and locality will have different statutes and zoning laws playing into your facilities as well. From where in the community you’re allowed to set up shop, to how large your facilities need to be— there’s a decent chance your state and local government have an opinion on what’s acceptable as well.

Leverage Effective Software
You’ll soon realize that analog methods of managing your business will be ineffective as it expands and grows. Your best bet is to invest in the right dog daycare software from the start , allowing it to scale with the business as it grows.
However, if you’re new to the dog daycare business (or simply looking to improve operations), you may not be familiar with this type of software. Start by evaluating what your customers and staffers are looking for in a software solution. Popular features to look for in a pet-care software solution are:
- Client and pet management features. This includes unlimited client profiles with photos, paperless waivers and other signed agreements, hidden internal staff notes for specific clients, and easy access to vaccination records, to name a few.
- Online booking and customer portal. This should be mobile-friendly, allow for digital signing of waivers and uploading of vet records, have the ability to collect deposits online, and even let customers view photos and videos of their pets. Plus, you should be able to customize the services, features, and forms available through online booking.
- Reservation management features. Look for easy customization of reservation types and viewing of availability, both for your staff and customers. Further, look for simple check-in/check-out procedures that still ensure you have all of the information needed to provide a safe stay.
- Communications features. Your customers will appreciate automatic communications for reservation confirmations and reminders, vaccination reminders, and report cards. Your staff will appreciate it when they don’t have to waste time manually sending these communications.
- Retail features. The ability to use your software as a point-of-sale system and offer add-on services and retail products will increase the profitability of your business.
- Marketing features. Top software can send SMS and email marketing communications quickly and easily. Further, you should be able to easily filter your customers and customize communications to them accordingly.
- Staff management features. Features to manage your staff, such as personalized to-do lists, commission tracking, a time-clock with associated reports, and even specialist scheduling (groomer, trainer) will drastically improve your internal processes.
Choosing the right software from the start will set your business up for success going forward. You’ll cut down on staff costs, lessen the risk of error, and stand out from the crowd with customer-facing features.

[Start-it-up] How to Start a Dog Boarding Business Dog boarding is a service which allows owners to drop their dogs off for a certain period of time by paying a fee
By Shipra Singh • Feb 18, 2020
You're reading Entrepreneur India, an international franchise of Entrepreneur Media.
All segments of Indian pet industry —food, accessories, toys, boarding, grooming and breeding—are witnessing an exponential growth. Reports show that the market is growing 14 per cent annually and is expected to be worth 430 million in 2020.
The growth potential in the pet industry has opened up several business opportunities, dog boarding being one such option.
What is Dog Boarding
Dog boarding, also known as Dog daycare, is a service which allows owners to drop their dogs off for a certain period of time by paying a fee.

Also Read: How to Start a Mobile Pet Grooming Business

Furnishing and additional construction in the facility will cost INR 4.5-5 lakh. Setting up the play area will cost around INR 20,000-25,000. Add another INR 60,000-70,000 on utility deposits, building the website, permits and other miscellaneous costs.
As for operational costs, rent of a 3000 sq ft land will be upwards of INR 1 lakh per month. Electricity and water bills can amount to about INR 20,000 per month and grocery for dog's food will be INR 7,000-10,000 per month. Next major chunk of your operating costs will be on staffing, which will be around INR 70,000 for 2 assistants and 2 people who will handle office work. Of course, if you handle the office work yourself, you can save on this cost to a great extent. Also, you may not have to hire more than one assistant in the beginning until you start getting 5-6 dogs for daily keeping. Next expense will be on marketing, which will cost INR 12,000-15,000 per month until you get enough repeat customers.
Your source of revenue will mainly be the fees charged to dog owners. Fees will vary as per the type of room, services provided and age of dog. Charge for overnight stay for a basic non-AC room ranges from INR 600-700. This includes food and boarding. For a room with cooler in the same category you can charge around INR 800, whereas a similar AC room can fetch you upto INR 1,000. If you provide pool services, you can add another INR 200-250 to the room charge. For a small puppy or an older dog who need exclusive attention, charges can be hiked by up to INR 200.

That's about overnight boarding charges. For day care, charges will be lower at INR 400-500 for about 10 hours. Again, depending on the size, age and temperament of the dog, you can charge higher than the regular fees.
So to give you an idea of your earning, if you get around 100 overnight boarding bookings and 50-60 day care bookings, you can book a profit of 20-25 per cent from the total revenue. A word of caution here - it can take you 8-10 months to build a sizeable customer base.

How to make money starting a doggie daycare business

If you love animals, you could consider earning a living by caring for other people’s pets. Running a pet daycare can be a fun and profitable business for the right entrepreneur.
Let’s look at why the pet industry offers a tempting opportunity for animal lovers and what factors might influence how much income you can earn.
Starting a doggie daycare business
8 key factors for a profitable pet daycare, how much can you earn running a pet daycare.
- The expenses you’ll need to cover
- The 8 steps to starting a doggie daycare
How to boost your profits
Making your pet daycare stand out, frequently asked questions.
Most pet owners spend a good portion of their paychecks on their furry companions.
On average, Canadians spent $2430 on their pets in 2021, an increase of over 17% over the past three years.
This 30% increase shows that pet parents are buying more toys and accessories, while focusing on products and services related to pet health and well-being. Common purchases often include:
- Enrichment toys
- Designer bedding
- Gluten-free or raw food
It’s also common for dogs to visit a grooming service or dog spa regularly. This type of service, combined with a dog daycare business, has the potential to draw in additional business.

The market size of the pet grooming and boarding industry in Canada is expected to grow 2% this year, totalling over $830 million in revenue in 2023.
In many households, a pet is an integral part of the family. As a result, there‘s a solid opportunity for business owners to offer quality care for pets when owners can’t be around to take care of them.
People who spend all day at work feel guilty leaving their pets alone and are happy to pay for the care, attention and exercise that a pet daycare provides. Starting a doggie daycare could be the perfect fit for someone who loves animals and wants to run their own business.
The biggest question you should have when considering any business opportunity is profitability. Can you turn it into a money-making business?
First, you’ll need to calculate what you could charge, add up your potential earnings, and see if you can cover the likely expenses.
If you crunch numbers before taking the plunge, you can protect yourself from starting a business that loses money.
Here are eight factors that could affect your income when opening a pet daycare:
- Population and density of pet owners in your location. Research how many people living in your area are pet owners.
- Competition and market rates in your area. You’ll need to compete with existing pet daycares. If you want to charge more than the market rate, you’ll need to offer more value.
- The level of service and rates you are willing to offer. Once you research what competitors are charging, you can consider what types of services you want to offer and how much you could charge.

- Franchise or startup costs. Will you start your own business or pay franchise fees? Of course, there are pros and cons to both, so do your research.
- Payroll and management costs. Who will manage the business? Will you be there every day, or will you hire staff?
- Number of pets you can care for at once. Each building or location you consider will be able to house a different number of pets. Therefore, for each potential site, estimate how many pets you can reasonably contain.
- Types of pets you want to allow. Will you welcome dogs, cats, or both? Will you accept small pets for more extended boarding? You’ll need enough space for each type of animal you allow.
Although many people look at this opportunity as a passion project, it’s important to weigh out the expenses before committing to a business in pet care services — especially if you want to make a profit.
We now know that a pet daycare could be a viable business option, depending on a few variables. So let’s look at how much income you could bring in if you opened a pet daycare.
Rates for pet care can vary across the country, especially when you compare urban and rural areas.
Let’s have a look at daycare rates for dogs first. It’s more common for families to opt for daytime care for their dogs, who likely need more exercise and supervision than their cats or small animals.
Daycare rates
Daycare rates for dogs can range from $23 to $55 per day. So, if you care for 15 dogs per day in your dog daycare facility, you could bring in $345 to $825 per day or $10,350 to $24,750 per month.
On the other hand, if you can manage 25 dogs per day, you could bring in $575 to $1,375 per day or $17,250 to $41,250 per month.
Overnight rates
Overnight boarding can bring in even more income, with rates ranging from $80-$100 per 24-hour stay. During their owners’ week-long vacations, welcoming 10 canine guests could earn you another $5,600 to $7,000 per month.
Rates for different species
To care for different animals, you’ll need separate areas to ensure you’re offering your furry guests the best care. For example, you might decide to have a cat room so people can board their cats with you for overnight travel or vacations.

Boarding fees for cats can range from $20 to $49.50 for overnight stays. If you were to care for 10 cats in a portion of your facility set aside for cat play and comfort, you could bring in another $200 to $495 per day, or $6,000 to $14,850 per month.
The expenses you’ll need to cover
Once you calculate potential income levels, list all possible expenses and see how many animals you’d need to care for to cover all your costs.
You may want to map out a few different scenarios with different options.
Doing so will allow you to compare different sizes of facilities with their respective costs and see what combination works best for you.
Potential expenses could include, but aren’t limited to:
- Rent or mortgage on a building for your pet daycare
- Building maintenance
- Domain and web hosting costs
- Liability or general business insurance
- Vet fees to have a veterinarian on call
- Employee benefits
- Training for yourself or staff
- Business licensing required by your local government
Be sure to include payment for your own time as well. How much should you plan to pay?
As a guideline, the average salary for managing a dog kennel in Canada is $40,000 .
You can use this in your planning for compensating yourself or whoever will manage the facility.

Of course, it would be wise also to calculate the minimum you need to earn to keep your business afloat. As much as any business could be a roaring success, it also will take time to get to the point where you’re fully booked.
In addition, you may have certain times of the year when you are less busy. Calculate a few different scenarios to help get an idea of how manageable this business would be year-round.
The 8 steps to starting a dog daycare business
Once you’ve thoroughly considered your interest in the business and the local market for pet care services, it’s time to get planning. As fun as taking care of dogs all day sounds, you’ll still want to be sure you can start your dream business off on the right foot, manage your costs and price your dog daycare services correctly.
You’ll also want to plan how to promote your business to ensure you can compete in your local market and reach potential customers.
Here are the steps to starting your own doggie daycare business:
1. Write a dog daycare business plan
An excellent first step is to create a business plan to help you weigh all relevant factors before leaping into a new business. A detailed business plan should cover:
- What services your business will provide, the products it will sell
- How it will operate
- How it will make money
A business plan can help you make decisions about how you want to run your business, and which options are most likely to be profitable.
It’s also a handy tool you’ll need any time you want to apply for business loans or grants, or set up other financial supports.
Outlining these details early in the process can help you recognize opportunities or challenges that could affect the success of your business.
2. Choose a business structure
As you map out potential costs for starting your doggie daycare business, you’ll also need to choose a business structure . You may want to run your business as a sole proprietor. Or perhaps you’d like to start it as a partnership or cooperative.
Each option has it’s own rules and tax requirements.
On the other hand, exploring potential franchise opportunities could allow you to get your foot in the door with lower risk. A franchise can also give you established practices to follow and in some cases training. But you’ll trade some freedom for that security.
3. Estimating your startup costs
Starting a business costs money, and you’ll want to assess how much of your own money you can afford to invest as well as any other potential sources of capital such as loans, partnering with another owner, or other investors.
You’ll need to consider:
- Where you’ll want to run your business
- What supplies and equipment you’ll need
- If you’ll rent or build a facility to operate your business
- How many staff you may need and what your payroll costs will be
Consider how many dogs you’ll care for at a time and if you’ll offer services for other pets (keeping in mind some of your customers may have more than one pet at home).
Then estimate the regular operating expenses you’re likely to incur — electricity, water, heating and cooling, etc.
4. Select a space
Whether you rent or lease, a big expense will be the space you need to operate your business. Dog daycare services and pet boarding take up a lot of room, and you’ll need:
- Comfortable spaces for each animal you care for
- Large communal play or exercise spaces
- Dog grooming facilities if you choose to offer these services

There may be bylaws or regulations about where you’re allowed to operate a doggie daycare business, so check into these first to be sure you can start and operate the business without disruption. You may want to also weigh neighbourhood considerations such as parking, noise, and being a safe distance from busy roads or intersections.
5. Hire your dog daycare staff
When starting a doggie daycare business, you’ll need to decide if you want to work in the business full-time or hire someone to manage the business for you.
This may depend on if you feel the business can pay you a comfortable salary and if you can be on the premises most of the time.
Either way, you’ll need to be sure you hire enough staff to offer a high level of customer service (answering phones, greeting dog owners who are dropping off, and handing off happy and tired-out dogs at the end of their stay).
You’ll need staff to care for the dogs, ensuring each receives the care and attention needed for a safe and fun experience their owners will want to repeat. You’ll also need a groomer if you plan to offer this service.
6. Buy equipment and supplies
You’ll need to outfit whatever building you choose for your new business to ensure you have:
- A functional office space
- A place for staff to store their belongings and spend their break time
- Safe and appealing areas for the dogs you’ll care for
You’ll need individual and secure areas for the dogs to stay when they are not directly supervised by staff, as well as toys and play equipment for any common areas.
A doggie daycare needs to be fun and comfortable for its furry guests while also keeping them safe.
Ensure you purchase the necessary supplies for first aid, care and cleaning, laundry and feeding of the pets in your care.
7. Define and apply your vision

Crafting policies and procedures for your business can help you stay on track and ensure that your team can deliver the service you envisioned when you started your business.
Consider other businesses in your local market. What will you offer that they don’t? Why should customers choose you? What practices can you adopt to offer a safe and comfortable stay for pets and a reassuring experience for dog owners?
8. Create a marketing strategy
Starting a business is a big commitment of time and money, and you’ll likely only see a return on your investment if you learn to promote your business.
While you may not have a generous marketing budget initially, create an online presence that new customers can find when they search online.
You’ll need:
- A website with valuable information that welcomes visitors to book their stay or contact you (see costs here )
- Active social media accounts that give potential customers a window into your facility, your approach to pet care, and your love for dogs
As your business and budget grow, you can begin taking advantage of paid advertising options to attract more new customers.
Related: How to overcome the 4 key challenges of promoting a service
You can also consider other income streams related to your pet daycare business that may offer higher profit margins. Below, we’ll discuss additional services and products you can add to your business model to maximize profits.
Tapping into additional services
There may be related services you can provide through your pet daycare. For example, some pet daycares offer:
- Dog grooming
- Overnight stays
- Dog training
- Long-term boarding for vacationing families
- Dog walking
If you can provide more services that families want for their pets and become their trusted resource for all types of pet care, you can boost how much income you bring in per customer.
Offering related products for the upsell
Many retail products have a higher profit margin than services. Therefore, pet care products can be appealing additions to your pet daycare. Some examples include:
- Specialty food
- Bath products and more

With a curated collection of quality products, you could increase how much pet owners buy from your pet care business each year.
The pet industry is big business and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. There is an opportunity for motivated entrepreneurs to find their niche in the pet care business.
Consider if your location is a good choice for a pet daycare and if pet care appeals to you enough to do it every day.
Additionally, it’s important to plan how you can differentiate yourself from competitors with attractive rates, related services and in-demand products to help boost your profit margin.
If you love pets and have always wanted to start your own small business, there’s a good chance you could run a profitable pet daycare!

How profitable is a doggie daycare?
The profitability of any doggie daycare business will depend on the going rates for pet care in your area and how much it will cost to operate your business.
Taking the time to create your small business plan and estimate your startup costs will help you assess if and how you can run a profitable doggie daycare.
Do dogs actually like daycare?
Many dogs love going to daycare! In most cases, dogs are dropped off at a dog daycare facility while their owners are busy at work or away for long periods of time.
Going to a doggie daycare allows dogs to have exercise, attention, and playtime that helps them burn off energy and stay out of trouble.
What are some good ideas for a daycare name?
When coming up with a new name for your doggie daycare, the first thing you’ll need to do is see what names are already in use in your area. Avoid any business name that sounds too similar to another in the same industry–first, to avoid confusion between the two businesses, and second, because you can’t copy an existing name that’s already been registered or trademarked.
Next, think about the elements that will set you apart from competitors and the way you’d like people to view your business. Then brainstorm words and phrases from those ideas that could be combined into a solid business name.
What are the positives and negatives of starting a doggie daycare?
Starting a doggie daycare could be the beginning of a rewarding chapter, but there are pros and cons to every business.
Some of the positive aspects might include the opportunity to work with animals every day and the freedom of running your own business. You may love working with people and the chance to connect with customers in your local community. You could be mentoring and training employees who want to get into the business and creating a business that builds financial security for your future.
Still, there will be challenges, and starting any business comes with risk. Doggie daycare is a business that supports customers who need service and support anytime an animal is in your care. If you offer overnight boarding, you’ll likely be taking care of pets while other people are on vacation and find it tricky to take your own holidays. You’ll be responsible for the safety and health of the animals you care for and will need to respond swiftly to any emergencies.
Finally, service businesses aren’t for everyone. It’s wise to know your preferences and consider if the day-to-day routines are a good match for your personality.
What is the average cost of doggie daycare?
Daycare rates for dogs can range from $23 to $55 per day. Overnight boarding can bring in even more income, with rates ranging from $80-$100 per 24-hour stay.
