How to Change My IP Address on iPhone iOS – [Simple Method]

June 5, 2021 August 22, 2022

Y our IP address is your unique ID across the internet. Without it, no one would be able to send you the precious content you are looking for.

But most of the time, this ID (a public IP address) is dynamic and temporary. It changes every time you move, either physically or virtually.

You are getting a new IP address on your iPhone every time you change from mobile data to Wi-Fi and vice versa, switch to different internet providers or use three of the methods described in this post.

Your Phone’s Public IP Address

There are two types of IP addresses: public and private IPs. We’ll explain why public IP addresses are important for your mobile device and how they change often. Private IP addresses are outside the scope of this article, as they aren’t used for the internet.

What’s Your Public IP?

When it comes to your iPhone, the public IP address is the unique ID used by your device to send and receive data online. Without a public IP address, you wouldn’t be able to use WhatsApp, Facebook or simply browse online. However, this “magical” public IP doesn’t belong to your iPhone device—rather, it’s assigned by higher authority devices, like a home router Wi-Fi setup or mobile broadband core gateway. Public IPs are usually assigned dynamically and temporarily using a protocol known as DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) and translated by NAT (network address translation).

Mobile broadband providers don’t assign a fixed IP to every single Wi-Fi router or device trying to connect to an online site or service. Otherwise, they would have run out of IPs a long time ago. Instead, they assign IPs dynamically and on-demand by looking into a pool of IPs, finding free IPs and reusing them. So, the next time you turn on your iPhone, you might be using a completely different public IP than before.

Running a quick query through our IP test tool or through the site whatismyIP.com throughout the day can show you the dynamic nature of your IP address.

Click here for more on the differences between a static IP address vs. a dynamic IP address.

The Simple Method

To understand the concept above, let’s use the following scenario:

While at home, you might be connecting your iPhone to your Wi-Fi network and have the mobile data (4G/LTE) off. Obviously, this is a good idea if you want to save those precious gigabytes while watching Netflix on your iPhone. At home with your Wi-Fi network and router, you’re probably using a particular internet service provider (ISP) and, therefore, a unique public IP. Then, you go out, and your iPhone changes to the 4G mobile broadband connection—again, a completely different network with a unique IP and data points.

In this case, your iPhone is using two different public IP addresses and probably more, thanks to the technology used by mobile carriers known as carrier-grade NAT.

That being said, the simplest way to change your IP (or use another IP that can’t be mapped to you) is to turn off the mobile data access and go to your closest coffee shop with Wi-Fi network connections. But there are issues that come with this: You put your privacy and security at risk using an unsecured Wi-Fi network.

Why Would You Want To Change Your IP Address?

Your public IP is something that, by different circumstances, might already be dynamic. Your iOS device could be using a handful of different public IP addresses daily, and you probably don’t know about it. Again, using the What Is My IP? website to monitor your IP addresses is always a good idea.

But still, there are ways to manually enforce and guarantee a new IP address. And, you probably landed here because you’re either concerned with your privacy and security, or you might just want to access geo-restricted Netflix libraries that are exclusive to users in certain countries.

Reasons to Change Your IP

  • Bypass restrictions

Changing your IP address helps you protect your identity and remain anonymous at your destination—which could be a web server, a torrent swarm or any service that uses your public IP address to talk back to you.

Changing your iPhone’s IP and using encryption improves the security of your traffic data and other information.

Changing your IP address can bypass either a country-wide firewall or a Content Delivery Network (CDN) that restricts access to certain content, based on a range of IPs or IP blacklists.

Methods to Change Your IP Address

There are various methods you can use to change your IP address. Which one you use depends on your requirements and resources. People change their IPs for a variety of reasons, from privacy protection to censorship circumvention to avoiding advertisers who want to build a profile on them.

An Example:

As shown in the diagram below, if your iPhone (client) connects to a website (www) via a VPN server (server), your original IP will be traceable for the infrastructure forwarding your traffic . This means your local ISP or government can map site traffic flows back to the source (you) using logs.

The idea of using an exit node, such as a VPN server, proxy or Tor exit relay, is to mask your IP address and forward traffic with its own IP. If the server is removing your traffic logs, nobody can trace them back to (source) you.

An image featuring a diagram of changing IP address

For any method that changes the public IP address of your iOS device, you’ll still be using your original IP address as an identity to reach that remote server (VPN, proxy or Tor). That means your IP source address will be traceable to whoever owns or manages your internet access, such as your internet service provider.

The following methods let you use someone else’s IP to mask your own. For privacy and protection, you can leverage encryption and ensure they aren’t keeping your traffic logs.

How to Change IP Address on iPhone: 3 Simple Ways

A virtual private network (or VPN) is the easiest and most secure way to change the IP address of your iPhone. A VPN lets you use the IP of a server as an online exit node while encrypting all your traffic and ensuring traffic privacy via no-logs policies . Additionally, the best VPNs have extensive worldwide networks, so you can choose any server physically located in a city/country and use its IP address to browse online.

An image featuring being connected to the United States with NordVPN

Here’s how to change the IP address on your iOS device with a VPN:

  • Get a VPN that supports iOS. Some products are more suitable for iPhone devices than a PC computer; see our list of options here .
  • Open the Apple App Store menu and search for VPN provider options, like NordVPN or ExpressVPN . Download/install the client.
  • Open the app information icon. Sign up and log in to your account with your username, email address, password and other account information.

In the following NordVPN screenshot, you can see the map of Europe with blue icons. This shows the available geographic spots/categories you can connect to with NordVPN. For example, when you connect to a Norway server, you’ll get a Norwegian IP address, and most likely, content tailored for the Norwegian audiences.

An image featuring a screenshot of NordVPN

Use a Proxy

Another way to change the IP address on your iPhone is to use a proxy. Proxies are different from VPNs—they’re much cheaper and provide much more flexibility. Cheaper because they don’t require the infrastructure the VPNs do, and more flexible because they work at a different OSI layer (layer 5 to 7). But these also make proxies less secure, as they don’t provide encryption.

Still, when you send your traffic via a proxy, your original IP address is masked with the proxy’s IP. In other words, it’s similar to using a VPN server but without encryption.

To change the IP address on your iPhone with a proxy:

  • Find a safe and secure proxy IP provider (avoid free proxies at all costs). Look for IPv6 proxies because they’re safer and fresher than IPv4s. A benefit of proxies is that you don’t need any software, only information.
  • Once you get the IP address of the proxy server and the port number (443 for HTTPS, for example), open your phone and go to the Settings menu.
  • Go to your Wi-Fi network settings menu to access the proxy settings of your phone. Tap on the name of the Wi-Fi network and scroll down the Wi-Fi settings menu until you find the HTTP proxy server. You can also change proxy IP settings for mobile data.
  • Enable proxy to manually configure the proxy settings, including IP (or hostname), port and authentication (if required).

An image featuring how to use a proxy on iPhone

This is important:

Also, note that a proxy changes your IP address for specific applications or services, not your entire online connection (as VPNs do in L3). So you might be using the proxy’s IP for some web applications and your original IP for others.

Use the Tor ‘Onion’ Browser

Tor is a free and open-source software program designed to provide anonymity while browsing online. In the words of the Tor Project , the software defends against tracking and surveillance and allows users to circumvent censorship.

To change your IP address on your iPhone using Tor:

  • Go to the Apple App Store and find Onion Browser for iOS.
  • Download and install it.

An image featuring how to use the Tor Onion browser on iPhone

Final Words

The easiest way to change your iPhone’s IP address is to use someone else’s Wi-Fi access while you have the mobile radio off. But if you insist on using the mobile radio (4G/LTE), most mobile carriers today dynamically assign and reuse IPv4 addresses to all their mobile users. So, it’s very likely that your IP today will not be the same as tomorrow.

But still, if you want to enforce a new IP address on your iPhone, use a VPN service, a proxy or the Tor browser. And don’t forget to test your new IP before and after to avoid a connectivity issue.

Change IP Address On iPhone

As mentioned above, the IP Address of iPhone and other connected devices is assigned by the DHCP Server, which in the case of Wi-Fi Network is your Modem/Router .

The IP Address of iPhone consists of 4 sets of numbers (say 192.175.0.12). In this, the first three number sets (192.175.0) are derived from Router IP Address and the last set is assigned by the Router to iPhone.

When you manually change the IP Address of iPhone, the first 3 number sets need to match the IP Address of the Router and only the last number set (12 in this case) can be changed or replaced with any number from 1 to 256.

You may find the need to change the IP Address of your iPhone to fix network connectivity problems, bypass website blocks, bypass firewalls and other reasons.

Step #1 – Find Router IP Address

The first step is to note down the IP Address of Router, as this will be required for use in the next step.

What is an IP address?

IP address stands for “internet protocol address”. It’s a string of numbers that uniquely identifies every device connected to the internet.

There are two kinds of internet protocols with different number formats: IPv4 and the newer IPv6 . IPv6 was introduced mainly because the world is running out of IPv4 addresses.

While IPv6 addresses are slowly catching on, most internet service providers (ISPs) and mobile networks still use IPv4 addresses. So your iPhone will most likely have an IPv4 address that looks something like 192.168.X.X or any other sequence of four numbers.

Types of IP addresses

There are two types of IP address you may want to change on a connected device: your public IP address and your local IP address.

Public IP address

Your public IP address is visible to anyone who wants to track you or restrict what you can access online. Every website you visit or service you use online will refer to your device using your public IP address.

If your iPhone is connected directly to the internet on a mobile network, it has its own public IP address assigned by the network operator.

If your iPhone is on WiFi, for example, connected to your home network, it will have the same public IP address as your WiFi router. Your ISP assigns your router’s public address. All the devices on your home WiFi network have the same public address.

Local IP address

Your local IP address is the address a WiFi router assigns to your device on a WiFi network. It’s only visible on the network, so third parties can’t use it to track you or restrict your activity online.

How to find your IP address on iPhone (iOS)

To see your public IP address on your iPhone or any other connected device, visit a site like ip.me . There you’ll see:

  • Your public IP address
  • The approximate location of the server you’re connected to
  • Your ISP’s name

What is your IP address website showing your public IP address

If your iPhone’s connected to WiFi, you can find your local IP address as follows:

1. Open Settings and tap Wi-Fi .

iOS Settings showing the Wi-Fi option to find your iPhone's local IP address

2. Tap the name of the WiFi network you’re connected to.

iOS Wi-Fi settings showing the WiFi network your iPhone is connected to

3. Scroll down to the IPv4 Address section, and you’ll see IP Address .

iOS Wi-Fi settings showing your iPhone's IPv4 address

If your iPhone is connected to an IPv6-enabled network, it will also be assigned at least one IPv6 IP address. Tap IP Address in the IPv6 Address section to view those IP addresses.

Why change your iPhone IP address?

As your iPhone’s local IP address is confined to your local WiFi network, no one can use it to track your activity online. So changing it won’t protect your privacy or give you more freedom on the internet.

In contrast, your public IP address is visible to anyone on the internet. Here’s why you might want to change it.

Protect your privacy

Your IP address shows your approximate physical location (to the city level). It’s also one way websites, big tech companies, hackers, and governments can track you across the internet, so changing it can make tracking you more difficult.

Access geoblocked content

Governments and companies use IP addresses to restrict access to content based on your location. You can bypass these restrictions by changing or hiding your public IP address.

Stream content when abroad

Streaming services use public IP addresses to restrict the content available in different parts of the world. By changing your IP address, you can continue to stream your favorite movies and shows when you travel abroad.

Change your local IP address on iPhone

You can manually change your private local IP address in your iPhone’s Settings.

To change your iPhone’s local IP address:

1. Go to Settings and tap Wi-Fi → [network name].

2. In the IPv4 Address section, Note down your current IP address , the Subnet Mask, and the Router address. Then tap Configure IP .

iOS Settings showing the Configure IP option to change your iPhone's IPv4 address manually

3. Select Manual . Then in the Manual IP section, enter a new IP address and add your subnet mask and router address.

iOS Settings showing the Manual IP section to manually change the IPv4 address on your iPhone

Note that the first three sets of numbers in your new IP address should be the same as your router’s. Only the last number should change — choose a number between 1 and 256.

4. Tap Save at the top right when you’re done.

You can only change your local IPv4 address in your iPhone Settings. If you want to change your local IPv6 address, you’ll need to adjust the IPv6 settings in your router (if it supports this).

Change your public IP address on iPhone

If your iPhone is connected to a mobile network, the network provider will set its public IP address.

If you’re on WiFi, your ISP usually assigns the IP address of the router you’re connected to, which will also be your iPhone’s public IP address.

There are various ways to change or hide your public IP address assigned by your mobile network or ISP.

Change your network

Connect to a new wireless network, like a public WiFi hotspot, and your device will be assigned a new public IP address. But make sure you read the terms of service of any “free” WiFi networks, as many make money by selling your personal data.

Restart your modem

Switch off your home WiFi router, wait for at least 10 seconds, then turn it back on again. Your ISP may assign your network a new public IP address, though it’s not guaranteed to work. Even if it does, you’ll likely get another address in the same city.

Contact your ISP

Ask your ISP to change your public IP address. They may not be ready to do this, and there are easier ways to change your address, but it’s one option you can try.

Use a proxy

A proxy is any server that sits between your device and the internet. An IP address from the proxy becomes your new public IP address, so your “real” public IP address is hidden.

There are many types of proxies , both free and paid. But proxies tend to be slow, and very few offer a secure, encrypted connection.

Connect via Tor

One type of proxy that gives you maximum anonymity online is the Tor network , which you can access by installing the Onion Browser on your iPhone.

With Tor, your internet traffic is encrypted and routed through a worldwide network of servers, concealing your original IP address. But using Tor will significantly slow down your internet and is only recommended if you’re looking for the highest level of anonymity.

One of the simplest ways to change your public IP address is to use a virtual private network (VPN) . A VPN is a proxy that creates an encrypted connection between your device and a special VPN server, which then connects to the internet.

While using a VPN is quick and easy, the VPN provider can see all you do online, so it’s essential to choose a VPN you can trust .

Changing your IP address FAQs

Why does my ip address show me to be in a different city.

Most ISPs and mobile operators assign blocks of public IP addresses to devices in certain geographical areas. That means that your public IP address may indicate where you are down to the level of your city or even suburb. But there’s no guarantee. An IP address can sometimes suggest you’re in a completely different area or even another country.

If you change your IP address with a VPN or another type of proxy server, you’ll appear to be wherever the server is located.

Is it illegal to change my IP address?

Not usually, no. Even in restrictive countries that don’t want you to bypass their censorship systems, access to proxies, VPNs, and Tor is often blocked, but it’s rarely a crime.

Is changing my IP address to stream content worldwide illegal?

It’s not illegal to change your IP address to stream content from abroad. But you need to make sure you comply with the terms and conditions of the service you’re using. For example, the Netflix terms of use say:

“You may access the Netflix content primarily within the country in which you have established your account and only in geographic locations where we offer our service and have licensed such content”.

So using a VPN to watch content that’s not licensed for the area you’re currently in is against Netflix’s policy. However, you have a right to watch content you pay for and can normally access when you’re home.

Now that you understand the importance of changing your IP address, let’s explore the different methods you can use to accomplish this on your iPhone. The following methods are easy to follow and require no technical expertise.

1. Restart your iPhone

One of the simplest ways to change your IP address on an iPhone is by restarting the device. This method is effective in many cases as it resets the network settings, including the IP address assignment. To restart your iPhone, press and hold the power button until you see the “slide to power off” option. Slide it to turn off the device, wait for a few seconds, and then press and hold the power button again until you see the Apple logo. Once your iPhone restarts, it will be assigned a new IP address.

2. Disconnect and reconnect from Wi-Fi

Another method to change your IP address is by disconnecting from the Wi-Fi network and reconnecting. To do this, go to the Settings app on your iPhone and tap on Wi-Fi. Find the Wi-Fi network you are connected to and tap on the (i) icon next to it. Then, tap on “Forget This Network” and confirm the action. After that, reconnect to the same Wi-Fi network by tapping on it again and entering the password if necessary. Your iPhone will obtain a new IP address from the router, effectively changing your IP.

3. Use a VPN app

Using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) app is another effective method to change your IP address on your iPhone. A VPN app creates a secure connection to a remote server and routes your internet traffic through it. This not only changes your IP address but also encrypts your data, enhancing your privacy and security. There are numerous VPN apps available for iOS, such as NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and CyberGhost. Simply download and install a trusted VPN app from the App Store, connect to a server location of your choice, and your IP address will be changed.

4. Reset network settings

If the previous methods did not work, you can try resetting the network settings on your iPhone. Keep in mind that this will reset all network-related settings, including Wi-Fi passwords, so make sure you have them handy before proceeding. To reset network settings, go to the Settings app, tap on General, then scroll down and tap on Reset. From the options available, select “Reset Network Settings” and confirm the action. After your iPhone restarts, your network settings will be restored to default, and your IP address will be changed.

5. Contact your internet service provider (ISP)

If none of the above methods work, or if you require a specific IP address, you can contact your internet service provider (ISP) directly. ISPs have the ability to assign IP addresses to their subscribers, and in some cases, they might be able to manually change your IP address upon request. Contact their customer support and explain your situation, and they should be able to assist you further.

By following these methods, you can easily change your IP address on your iPhone and enjoy the benefits that come with it. Whether you prefer a quick restart, reconnecting to Wi-Fi, using a VPN app, resetting network settings, or reaching out to your ISP, there’s a solution that fits your needs. Stay in control of your online experience and adapt your IP address as necessary.

Method 1: Restart your iPhone

One of the simplest and most straightforward methods to change your IP address on an iPhone is by restarting the device. This method is effective in many cases as it resets the network settings, including the IP address assignment.

To restart your iPhone, follow these steps:

  • Press and hold the power button located on the side or top of your iPhone until you see the “slide to power off” option.
  • Slide the power button from left to right to turn off your iPhone.
  • Wait for a few seconds to ensure the device is completely turned off.
  • Press and hold the power button again until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
  • Release the power button and wait for your iPhone to restart. This may take a moment.

After your iPhone restarts, it will be assigned a new IP address from your network’s DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server. This method is particularly useful when you want to quickly obtain a new IP address without making any manual changes to your device’s settings.

It’s important to note that restarting your iPhone may also resolve other network-related issues such as slow internet speeds or connectivity problems. Additionally, it can help refresh the device’s network connections and establish a new connection to your Wi-Fi network, which might improve overall network performance.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that restarting your iPhone will not guarantee a change in IP address if your network’s DHCP server has a long lease time or if your ISP (Internet Service Provider) assigns static IP addresses. In such cases, you may need to try alternative methods or contact your ISP for further assistance.

To conclude, restarting your iPhone is a quick and simple method to change your IP address. By following these steps, you can easily obtain a new IP address and potentially resolve network-related issues. Give it a try whenever you need a fresh connection or want to troubleshoot IP-related problems.

Method 2: Disconnect and reconnect from Wi-Fi

Another method to change your IP address on an iPhone is by disconnecting from the Wi-Fi network and reconnecting. This method is straightforward and can be effective in obtaining a new IP address.

To disconnect and reconnect from Wi-Fi, follow these steps:

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  • Tap on Wi-Fi, which is usually located near the top of the Settings menu.
  • Find the Wi-Fi network you are currently connected to and tap on the (i) icon next to it. This icon provides more detailed information about the network.
  • On the network details page, tap on the “Forget This Network” option. A confirmation pop-up will appear.
  • Confirm the action by tapping on “Forget” to disconnect from the network. This will remove the network’s stored settings from your iPhone.
  • After disconnecting, go back to the list of available Wi-Fi networks and tap on the same network you previously disconnected from.
  • If prompted, enter the password to reconnect to the network.

By disconnecting and reconnecting to the Wi-Fi network, your iPhone will request a new IP address from the network’s DHCP server. In most cases, the server will assign a fresh IP address to your device, effectively changing your IP.

This method is particularly useful when you want to quickly change your IP address without restarting your iPhone or using any additional apps. It can be helpful for troubleshooting connectivity issues, improving network performance, or bypassing certain restrictions that may be associated with your previous IP address.

However, it’s important to note that this method may not always guarantee a change in IP address, especially if your network’s DHCP server has a long lease time. In such cases, you may need to wait for the lease to expire or try alternative methods.

In summary, disconnecting and reconnecting from Wi-Fi is a simple and effective method to change your IP address on an iPhone. By following these steps, you can obtain a new IP address and potentially overcome network-related limitations. Give it a try whenever you need a fresh IP or want to troubleshoot network connectivity issues.

Method 3: Use a VPN app

Using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) app is another effective method to change your IP address on your iPhone. A VPN app creates a secure connection to a remote server and routes your internet traffic through it, which can help you obtain a new IP address and enhance your online privacy and security.

To change your IP address using a VPN app, follow these steps:

  • Browse the App Store on your iPhone and search for a reputable VPN app such as NordVPN, ExpressVPN, or CyberGhost.
  • Download and install the VPN app of your choice by following the on-screen instructions.
  • Once installed, open the VPN app and create an account if required. Most VPN apps offer a free trial or a range of subscription options.
  • Follow the prompts within the app to connect to a VPN server. Usually, you can choose from various server locations across different countries.
  • Once connected, the VPN app will encrypt your internet traffic and route it through the selected server. Your IP address will be replaced with the IP address of the server you are connected to.

By using a VPN app, you can change your IP address to one associated with the server location you have chosen. This allows you to bypass geographic restrictions and access content that might be blocked in your region. Moreover, a VPN encrypts your data, ensuring your online activities remain private and secure.

It is important to choose a reliable and trustworthy VPN app to ensure the safety of your personal information. Look for VPN providers with strong encryption protocols, a strict no-logs policy, and a wide range of server locations. Additionally, consider the speed and performance of the VPN service to ensure a seamless browsing experience.

Keep in mind that while a VPN app is an effective method to change your IP address, it may require a subscription fee for the full range of features and server options. However, the added benefits of increased privacy, security, and access to geo-restricted content often make it worthwhile.

In summary, using a VPN app is a popular and reliable method to change your IP address on an iPhone. By following these steps and connecting to a VPN server, you can obtain a new IP address, enhance your online privacy, and bypass geographic restrictions. Consider using a trusted VPN app for a seamless and secure browsing experience.

Method 4: Reset network settings

If the previous methods did not work or if you require a more drastic change in your IP address, you can try resetting the network settings on your iPhone. This method will restore all network-related settings on your device to their default configurations, effectively obtaining a new IP address.

To reset network settings on your iPhone, follow these steps:

  • Scroll down and tap on “General.”
  • Scroll further down and tap on “Reset.”
  • From the options available, tap on “Reset Network Settings.”
  • A confirmation pop-up will appear, allowing you to confirm the action. Keep in mind that this will also remove saved Wi-Fi passwords and other network-related settings, so ensure that you have the necessary information to reconnect to your Wi-Fi networks.
  • Once confirmed, your iPhone will proceed to reset the network settings. It may take a few moments, and your device will restart.

After the reset, your iPhone’s network settings will be restored to their default state, including the IP address assignment. Your device will now obtain a new IP address when connecting to Wi-Fi networks.

Resetting network settings can be helpful in resolving persistent connectivity issues, such as slow internet speeds or difficulty connecting to certain networks. It is a more comprehensive method that can effectively reset any network-related configurations that might be causing conflicts or issues.

However, keep in mind that resetting network settings will remove any customizations or saved Wi-Fi passwords on your device. You will need to reenter the Wi-Fi passwords and go through the setup process again for any Bluetooth or VPN connections.

It is also worth noting that resetting network settings will not guarantee a change in your IP address if your internet service provider (ISP) assigns static IP addresses or if your network’s DHCP server has a long lease time. In these cases, you may need to contact your ISP for assistance or consider other methods to change your IP address.

To sum up, resetting network settings is a comprehensive method to change your IP address on an iPhone. By following these steps and allowing your device to restore its network settings to default, you can obtain a new IP address and potentially resolve persistent network issues. Use this method cautiously, ensuring you have the necessary information to reconnect to your Wi-Fi networks.

Method 5: Contact your internet service provider (ISP)

If none of the previous methods have successfully changed your IP address, or if you require a specific IP address for a particular purpose, you can consider contacting your internet service provider (ISP) directly. ISPs have the ability to assign IP addresses to their subscribers, and in some cases, they may be able to manually change your IP address upon request.

To change your IP address through your ISP, follow these steps:

  • Gather your account information and contact details. This may include your account number, name, and any identification details your ISP may require for verification.
  • Call your ISP’s customer support hotline or visit their support website.
  • Explain your situation to the support representative or fill out any necessary forms on the website. Clearly state your request to change your IP address and provide a reason if required.
  • Follow any instructions or guidelines provided by the support representative or on the website to proceed with the IP change request.
  • Depending on your ISP’s policies and processes, they may require some time to process your request. You may be required to restart your modem/router or take other actions for the IP address change to take effect.

By contacting your ISP, you can potentially request a specific IP address or seek assistance in changing your IP address. This is particularly helpful if you need an IP address for a specific purpose, such as accessing specific services or resolving network-related issues.

Keep in mind that ISPs may have limitations and policies regarding IP address changes. They may assign IP addresses dynamically or have a limited pool of available addresses. Additionally, your ISP may charge a fee or have specific requirements for changing IP addresses.

It’s important to note that this method may not be available or viable for all users. Some ISPs do not allow customers to change their IP address manually, while others may charge additional fees for such requests. It is recommended to check with your ISP’s customer support to verify their capabilities and any associated costs before proceeding.

To summarize, contacting your internet service provider (ISP) is an option to explore if you want to change your IP address, especially if you require a specific IP address for a particular purpose. By following these steps and communicating with your ISP’s customer support, you can potentially request an IP address change. Be sure to check your ISP’s policies, any associated fees, and requirements before proceeding.

How to change your ip address.

Need to fix networking issues? Changing your IP address should help.

Quick Links

Why would you want to change your ip address, static vs. dynamic ips: should you get a static address instead, key takeaways.

The simplest way to change your IP address is to power off your router, wait at least 10 seconds, then power it back on. If that doesn't fix your problem, you may want to set a static IP address instead.

Changing your IP address is a simple fix for a number of networking issues. However, there's more than one way to cook that particular egg. So let's go over your options for getting a new IP address, and why you'd choose one over the other.

Your  IP address is a set of numbers that works both as a way to locate you in the real world as well as serves as your digital address. When you connect to the internet, for example, your internet service provider or ISP will assign you an IP that will reveal to the sites you visit where you're connecting from---it's why sites will usually change language when you're accessing them from abroad.

Changing your network IP will make you appear like you're somewhere else, great for circumventing censorship blocks or even changing your Netflix library to that of another country. However, that's not possible without using outside help, so to speak. You'll usually have to use a third-party program to alter your IP that way, and it only works while that program is active.

There are a few ways to temporarily change your IP like this, we discuss them at length in our article on how to hide your IP address . In most cases, your best bet is to use a virtual private network (VPN) to fake your IP and thus make it appear that you're somewhere else. It's pretty cool, and easy to do.

However, it's not just your internet connection that broadcasts an IP address: each device you own also has its own, unique IP. This is so each device can properly communicate with both the network and each other.

If there's a problem with your network's IP or that of a specific device, they may not connect properly or have some other issues. A VPN won't fix these problems, at least not for the long-term; the only way to get rid of these issues is to permanently change your IP address. Luckily, this isn't that hard to do.

The first way to fix any issues is to change your network's IP. This is a lot easier than you may think thanks to something called the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol . DHCP is a protocol---a set of rules that governs how machines "talk" to each other---which can change the IP address associated on the fly, hence "dynamic."

To do so, all you really need to do is turn your router off, wait 10 seconds, and turn it on again . (Simply resetting usually doesn't work, but it depends very much on the router.) Once the router is fully on and working again, you should have a new IP address.

You can, of course, check to make sure. To do so, before you switch off the router, find your IP address either by asking your favorite search engine what it is or using a tool like IPleak.net . Write down the IP, switch your router on and off, and then check again.

However, the above fix is a short-term one that mainly only works if you have a simple issue, like if your router suddenly starts acting up. If you have permanent networking issues with your devices, you may have to throw out DHCP altogether and instead set up a static IP address, one that doesn't change.

Setting a static IP address will hopefully get rid of any networking issues, or at least narrow down the list of possible causes for why your devices aren't talking to each other. That said, there are a few different ways to tackle this issue.

First off, you could reach out to your ISP and simply ask them to change your IP address. You'll probably have to explain what the issue is and walk through a few steps with them---this really depends on your ISP---but if the tech is worth their salt, they'll take care of it for you.

Manually Set a Static IP Address

However, that may not be necessary: there are plenty of ways you can track down and fix any issues yourself, starting with changing your router's IP to static. We have a full tutorial on how to set a static IP on your router , and this should hopefully change any issues you have on the network level.

That said, it could be your laptop or desktop causing the issues. In that case, you could try setting a static IP on your Windows computer ---or, if you prefer, using the Windows command prompt . Members of Team Penguin can check out this tutorial on how to set a static IP in Ubuntu . It's also worth noting that  iPhones have a built-in function for changing IPs and setting static ones too .

Whichever route you end up taking, with a few minutes of work your networking issues should be a thing of the past.

Of course, some people may not be totally clear on what an IP address actually is; no shame here! An IP address, which standards for an internet protocol address, is a device’s identifying number associated with a specific computer or network of computers. Basically, IP addresses let computers send and receive information, but they can also be used to track the physical locations of users, 4 a nightmare for those concerned with privacy. And according to our VPN usage research , that accounts for 40 percent of VPN-users.

Types of IP Addresses

Not all IP addresses are created equal! Rather, they can be divided into a few different categories, some of which have certain advantages over others.

  • Public : Each and every internet-connected device has a public IP address, distributed by the Internet Service Providers vis-à-vis the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. What, you haven’t heard of ICANN? Nevertheless, these public IP addresses are searchable on the web, which is why we can find our printer simply by Googling its IP address .
  • Private/ local : In contrast to public IP addresses, private IP addresses aren’t searchable on the web. Rather, they’re numbers that routers assign the devices on their networks so that they can communicate with each other.
  • Dynamic : Dynamic IP addresses, as we mentioned before, are any type of IP address that change every time you connect, usually through a VPN. This makes users hard to track online, as their literal address keeps changing.
  • Static : Static means that the IP addresses do not change. With VPNs, static IP addresses are usually shared with thousands of users in order to obscure their identities. However, some websites block these shared IP addresses, which necessitates users getting dedicated IP addresses. What a convenient transition!
  • Dedicated : Dedicated IP addresses are assigned to only one user rather than being shared by several. They usually cost a different fee on top of the regular VPN subscription.

  • IPv4 : Internet Protocol version 4 is used by 99 percent of networks, but since it can only store 4.3 billion addresses, it’s being replaced by IPv6, which we’ll get to in a second. Unlike IPv6, IPv4 addresses are four one bite numbers separated by dots like 555.555.1.1.
  • IPv6 : While they’re only used by less than 1 percent of networks, IPv6 has its advantages over IPv4, namely that it can provide an infinite number of addresses. It also allows for larger payloads and is compatible with a greater number of mobile networks. Although they’re starting small, eventually, IPv6 will replace IPv4. 5

Of course, there’s always the debate of whether or not to change your IP address in the first place. While the angel on your shoulder tells you it’s a great way to increase your privacy and access other country’s servers, the devil tells you that it could be costly, that some websites won’t work and that your ISP will still be able to see your address. There’s truth to both of these sides, so we recommend making your decisions on a case-by-case basis. That being said, we broke down the main reasons why you should and shouldn’t change your IP address.

Why You Should Change Your IP Address

  • Avoid tracking : If you’ve ever searched for anything related to consumerism, then you probably already notice how your searches seem to follow you around the internet like you owe them money. This sort of tracking is made possible by cookies, which some antivirus software can disable.
  • Bypass government restrictions : Governments like China greatly restrict internet usage in their country, so if you want to bypass firewalls, changing your IP address is a must.
  • Access international servers : Maybe you simply want to see what’s on Netflix Canada from your apartment in California. By changing your IP address to a Canadian one, you can trick the streaming giant into showing you a whole lot of new content.

FYI: Not all VPNs are compatible with Netflix. To find one that’s right for you, read our review of the best VPNs for Netflix .

  • Gain privacy : Maybe you’re an activist, a journalist, or anyone else handling sensitive information, or maybe you just don’t want your Internet Service Provider to track your every move. If that’s the case, changing your IP address is a step in the right direction in terms of privacy.
  • Increase security : Most people think nothing of joining public Wi-Fi networks (and depending on your settings, this may even happen automatically). However, using public Wi-Fi opens up a slew of security risks, with hacking at the forefront. But by hiding your real IP address, you greatly lower your risk of hackings .

Why You Shouldn’t Change Your IP Address

  • Some websites won’t work : Some websites, like the aforementioned Netflix, won’t work with certain VPNs or proxies. So while they may be able to bypass government restrictions, that doesn’t stop individual websites from blocking certain IP addresses.
  • Not always legal : Depending on where you are, VPNs may not be legal ; they’re banned in China, Belarus, Iran and a few other countries, so keep that in mind before you connect.
  • May slow down connection : Any added encryption will slow down your browsing speeds, although the exact slowdowns will differ from service to service. Still, if you’re performing tasks that require a lot of bandwidth like streaming video or video chatting, you might experience some frustrating lag.
  • VPN may log data : Again, depending on the service, your VPN company may be logging the very information you want to hide, like your IP address and web traffic. Our advice? Always read the VPN’s privacy policy, which we cover in our individual VPN reviews, and talk about it extensively on our best no-logging VPNs page.
  • Could cost money : Not all VPNs are free (except of course, the ones that are; check out the best free VPNs to see what we’re talking about). Still, free VPNs typically have limits on time, data, or servers, so if you want full coverage, you might have to pony up some dough.
  • ISP’s will still be able to see IP : Even with a new IP address, your Internet Service Provider will be able to see it, so you’re never truly “private” when you’re online.

Overall, we’re of the faith that changing your IP address is a necessity at times, and we love that there’s more than one way to do it. We hope we answered all of your questions about changing your IP address, but if we didn’t, read on.

Being public digital security experts, we’re constantly inundated with a number of questions surrounding changing your IP address. Here are those questions, with, you guessed it, answers.

You can change your IP address in your device settings or by using the Tor browser, a VPN or a proxy server.

Changing your IP address may or may not be legal; it depends on how you do it and where you’re located. For example, using a VPN to change your IP address is legal in the U.S but illegal in China.

Your IP address may show a different city if you’re connected to a VPN or proxy server with servers in that city. That may be the closest server to you, or simply the one that allows for the lowest bandwidth usage.

Resetting your router may or may not change your IP address, depending on how long you wait before you turn it back on. We recommend waiting for about a day in order to get a new IP address.

Fortunately, changing your iPhone’s IP address is quite easy, and you don’t need any technical expertise to do it. In this blog post, we’ll explore several methods that you can use to change the IP address on your iPhone.

  • Troubleshooting Connectivity Issues : If you’re experiencing connectivity problems on your iPhone, changing your IP address can help resolve the issue. Sometimes, your IP address may conflict with other devices on the same network, causing connectivity problems.
  • Securing Online Transactions : Changing your IP address can also enhance the security of your online transactions, such as online banking and shopping. Hackers can target your IP address and intercept your online transactions, but by changing your IP address frequently, you can prevent these attacks.

  • Open the VPN app and sign in or create an account.
  • Select a server location and connect to the VPN.
  • Provides advanced security features such as encryption and IP address masking.
  • Enables you to access geo-restricted content.
  • May slow down your internet connection due to encryption.
  • Requires a subscription fee for premium VPN services.

What to Do If You Can’t Change The IP Address on Your iPhone

If you’re unable to change the IP address on your iPhone using the methods mentioned above, here are some fixes you can try:

  • Restart your iPhone : Sometimes, a simple restart can fix connectivity issues and enable you to change the IP address.
  • Reset your network settings : Resetting your network settings can help resolve issues related to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and cellular connectivity.
  • Contact your network administrator : If you’re using a managed network, such as a corporate network or school network, contact your network administrator to see if they have disabled IP address configuration.

To change your iPhone’s IP address quickly and easily, you can use a dedicated IP changer app such as " Network/IP Scanner. " This app enables you to scan your network for available IP addresses and change your iPhone’s IP address with a single tap.

How to Change IP Address on iPhone With a VPN

For me, the absolute best way of changing your IP on any iPhone is by using a VPN. A VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and it’s a service that offers a lot of benefits. The first benefit is routing your traffic through a VPN tunnel, which keeps your online activities private.

It does so by changing your IP address to another country, which also changes your online location (you can also connect somewhere in your country if you prefer). Here, we can already guess the two benefits you’ll get – online privacy and the ability to unblock geo-restricted sites. For example, you can use a VPN to bet online abroad if you want.

Nevertheless, if you change your IP on an iPhone this way, you will get these two but also a lot more VPN benefits, such as browsing the dark web safely, saving money on online purchases, gaming with low ping, and much more. I’m telling you this because it’s the only method on this list with these benefits.

With other methods that I’ll present, you’ll have virtually no benefits aside from the iPhone IP change. For this purpose, I will use ExpressVPN and the tutorial that I’ll give you is with this provider in place. Rest assured, it works the same with all providers.

If you want to evaluate other possibilities, here are our top recommendations:

1. Get a VPN

Let’s start by getting a VPN. As said, I recommend ExpressVPN as the best iPhone VPN service with 3,000+ servers in 105 countries. This means you can alter your IP to 105 countries, such as the US, Canada, Japan, Germany, Singapore, the UK, Italy, and many others.

In addition, we’re talking about the fastest provider on the market, which grants exceptional speeds on all servers with no compromises. Needless to say, the provider offers all of the aforementioned benefits but the point is that it isn’t free.

Don’t fret. It has s 49% discount and 3 free months for the annual plan along with a 30-day money-back guarantee. This means you can use it to change your IP address on your iPhone, enjoy the benefits, and get a FULL refund in the first 30 days if you don’t want to use it anymore.

Visit ExpressVPN

If you’re interested, I highly recommend using the button above to get this cheapest deal on ExpressVPN. After all, it won’t last forever, so don’t be afraid to check it out now.

2. Install a VPN on the iPhone

Once you’ve subscribed to ExpressVPN and provided login credentials, all you need to do is install ExpressVPN on your iPhone. ExpressVPN works on at least iOS 12.0 or later and it even offers a 7-day free trial for iPhone users, so it’s a great choice after all.

ExpressVPN Apple Store iPhone

Visit the Apple Store, find ExpressVPN, and download it. This will take no more than 15 seconds, after which, you’re ready to move to another step.

3. Open a VPN and Connect to a Server

Now, it’s time to open ExpressVPN and sign in with the credentials you provided when purchasing it. Use your email and password, or simply take advantage of the activation code that ExpressVPN provided you with during the sign-up process.

ExpressVPN iPhone

The interface of ExpressVPN will look like the one in the image above. From here, tap on the three horizontal dots next to “Italy – Cosenza” to open the server list. Decide on where you want to be seen. In this case, I will change my IP address to Canada , for example.

To do that, I’ll tap on All Locations, select Americas, and tap once on Canada. If your iPhone asks you to allow the VPN connections in your settings after that, do it, and in less than two seconds, the connection will be established.

ExpressVPN iOS Connected

This is indicated by ExpressVPN turning green instead of orange, which implies that your new IP is in place.

4. Make Sure Your IP Is Changed

Just to make sure everything went well, I recommend using any website for checking your IP. I often use iplocation.net to do that. Simply visit this website and take note of the IP you see. Is it different from your original IP? Is it in the country you’ve selected on your iPhone?

In that case, the process is a success. You’ve changed your IP on an iPhone – congrats!

How to Change IP Address on iPhone Manually

If you don’t want to use a VPN, you can always change your IP address on an iPhone manually. However, while this method seems easier, know that it yields no special benefits compared to a VPN service.

This way, you can change your IP to another address from the pool of your ISP. This address will still be in your country, with no additional security and privacy, no ability to bypass geo-blocks, or anything else that a VPN will give you.

Still, it’s worth trying if you need a quick and simple iPhone IP address change. Here are the steps.

  • Open Settings on your iPhone
  • Click on Wi-Fi and find the network you’re connected to. Tap on it.
  • In the new menu, scroll down and find the option that says “ Configure IP .” It will be set to Automatic, but tap once on it and choose Manual .
  • Once you do that, simply enter a new IP address plus the subnet mask and the router address.
  • Tap Save and your IP address will be changed. You can now close the Settings menu and browse the internet by using the new IP address.

Change IP Manually iOS

How to Change IP Address on iPhone by Renewing the Lease

The last method to change your IP on an iPhone is to renew the lease in the Settings menu. I’ve intentionally left this method for the end because it’s not as efficient and renewing the lease isn’t a guarantee that your IP address will change.

The method is dependent not only on your WiFi settings but also on your router, so it might not work for everyone. Not to mention that it has the same characteristics as the previous method. In other words, you don’t get to enjoy the benefits of a VPN service here.

Without further ado, here are the steps for changing an IP address on your iPhone with the lease renewal.

  • Open Settings on your iPhone.
  • Once again, tap on Wi-Fi and select the network you’re connected to.
  • Scroll down and find the option that says “ Renew Lease .” Tap on it.
  • When prompted, tap on “Renew Lease” again and your IP address should change to another one from your ISP’s pool of IP addresses.

Can I Use a Free Proxy or a Free VPN to Change My IP Address on My iPhone?

Before wrapping up this guide, I quickly want to address two means of changing your IP on an iPhone. The first one is by using a free proxy. You can find hundreds of free proxies online and they will route your traffic through an alternate IP address.

However, free proxies are extremely dangerous because they’re often held by an unknown entity or company, so you don’t know if a particular proxy service collects and sells your personal info when using it. Not only that, but proxies have NO encryption or additional security!

This means that your ISP can still track your online activities and see that you’re using a proxy. Proxies are also slow and you’ll have to wait for quite a lot of time to properly load a website, which sometimes isn’t successful, depending on the proxy you’re using.

Last but not least, proxies usually don’t let you choose the country where you want to get an IP address, and if they do, you get up to 5-6 locations, unlike ExpressVPN where you get 105 countries. Speaking of ExpressVPN, we should mention free VPNs for your iPhone .

If you decide to use a free VPN, you better be ready for similar compromises. Free providers offer limited bandwidth, very slow speeds, unstable performance, and weaker security, although they’re a tad better than free proxies.

However, keep in mind that they offer just a few server locations to pick from and many of them openly sell your personal data to third parties (Hola VPN, looking at you!) to earn money. After all, the limited bandwidth of up to 10 GB a month should already be a big red flag, let alone all privacy issues.

That’s why I recommended ExpressVPN for this purpose as the most reliable solution with no limits. Not only does it have a big 49% discount and 3 free months for the 12-month plan but its 30-day refund period lets you use it risk-free for 30 days.

Try ExpressVPN Risk-Free Now

With the tutorials on how to change your IP address on your iPhone, I think it’s safe to say that you have a few solid options. To be honest, I always recommend using a VPN for this purpose simply because it’s the safest method and provides tons of benefits at a very low price (a few dollars a month).

However, if you aren’t looking for these benefits and you don’t care about additional privacy or streaming capabilities, changing your IP on an iPhone manually or renewing the lease is also possible. Besides, it takes no more than a minute, making it quick and efficient.

Now it’s up to you to decide on which method for an iPhone IP change will you use. Is it going to be a VPN, free proxy, manual change, or something else?

In this section, we’ll go over a few frequently asked questions related to changing your IP address on an iPhone.

What are the pros and cons of changing your IP on an iPhone?

There are many advantages of altering your IP address, be it on your iPhone or other devices. As mentioned, doing so will let you access geo-blocks and unblock websites you couldn’t access before. Another benefit is online security.

When you use a VPN for this purpose, it’ll conceal your original IP and mask your online activities. In addition, it’ll prevent ISP throttling, which lets you explore the internet at full speed. Changing your IP also lets you travel cheaper .

It allows you to save money on flight tickets and hotel rentals by pretending you’re in a less-developed country. As for downsides, there aren’t many as long as you’re using ExpressVPN or other quality VPNs. Still, it’s good to know you might still encounter geo-blocks.

Switching your IP on an iPhone means you won’t be able to access local content. Another problem might be connection slowdown, which will occur if you’re using a slower VPN. Logging can happen if we’re discussing free VPNs.

After all, the solution will cost you money if you decide to use ExpressVPN or any other paid service. If that bothers you, know that you can get a refund in the first 30 days and not lose a single dollar by using ExpressVPN or any other provider.

Is changing my IP legal?

It usually is. Some countries deem this illegal, such as North Korea, Belarus, Turkmenistan, and a few others. In the majority of the world, changing your IP address is legal and perfectly safe as long as you don’t perform illicit activities.

VPN not changing my IP on an iPhone, what can I do?

It looks like your VPN is not connecting if this happens. Or perhaps, it’s leaking your IP/DNS addresses. Most likely, you’re using a low-quality provider or facing issues with your network. The good thing to do is to try another server or use another protocol.

If the issue persists, you can try to update the VPN client and/or restart your iPhone. We recommend contacting the support team of your VPN if everything fails. It should be able to fix the problem promptly, even if it’s on your side.

Surfshark VPN for iPhone security

Here are 15 valuable reasons you may want to change your iPhone location with a VPN:

  • Privacy protection: VPNs encrypt your internet connection, guarding your online activity from malicious parties.
  • Data security: VPNs add an extra layer of security, making it harder for hackers to steal your sensitive information.
  • Anonymous browsing: VPNs mask your IP address which allows you to browse anonymously and stop websites from tracking your location and creating targeted personal profiles.
  • Bypass geo-restrictions: Get content that is restricted in your region with a virtual iPhone location.
  • Secure Wi-Fi connections: Stay safe on public WiFi networks, lowering the risk of data theft and more.
  • Safe financial transactions: Ensure the security of your purchases and sensitive information when banking and shopping online.
  • Avoid bandwidth restrictions: Prevent ISPs from throttling your internet speed with a VPN.
  • Remote Access: VPNs let you connect securely to your home or work network from anywhere.
  • Say no to censorship: View blocked websites and step around censorship imposed by governments and other organizations.
  • Secure file sharing: Share files securely without revealing your IP address.
  • Secure Communication: Encrypt your texts and calls for confidentiality.
  • Improved online gaming: Reduce lag and enhance your gaming experience.
  • Protect IoT devices: Secure your smart home devices by routing traffic through a VPN.
  • Defend against malware: Some VPNs like Surfshark come with built-in features to protect you from malicious websites and malware.
  • Protection against DDoS attacks: VPNs can reduce the impact of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks on your online presence.

If you want to turn off the location services of your iPhone and don’t want to fully power the device down, you can follow these steps:

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone
  • Swipe down and choose Security & Privacy
  • At the top, tap Location Services
  • Now tap the toggle at the top to turn Location Services off

Below the main toggle to turn Location Services on/off, you can change the permissions for each iPhone app. Tap an app in the list to change the Location Services settings.

However, the downside with these options is that many apps and services won’t work with Location Services fully turned off.

That’s why a VPN is a great solution as you retain your privacy, security, and more while being able to use the apps, websites, and services you love.

  • On iPhone, open the Settings app

Location spoofing apps

Fake your iPhone GPS location using iTools:

  • Install the iTools application
  • Connect your iPhone to the computer, launch the app, and go to Toolbox then Virtual Location
  • Enable Developer Mode and obtain the iOS Developer Disk Image
  • Enter your desired location in the search field at the screen’s top, press Go, and then click “Move here” to alter your GPS location

Change your iPhone location with 3uTools:

  • Download and open the 3uTools program
  • Attach your iPhone to the computer, access Toolbox, and select Virtual Location from the menu that appears
  • Choose the desired locale, and click on Modify virtual location

To revert to your real location after using GPS spoofing, you must reboot your iPhone. If not, your fake GPS location will continue to be displayed on your apps as the actual location. Be aware that GPS spoofing is generally not secure and does not guarantee privacy.

VPN Services

A VPN can’t change your GPS location, but it can change your IP address location, which some apps and websites may use to determine your approximate location:

  • Subscribe to a VPN service like Surfshark VPN
  • Download the VPN app onto your iPhone
  • Open the app and connect to a server in the location you wish to appear from
  • Your IP address-based location should now appear as the location of the server to which you’re connected

To check if you connected successfully, check your IP address and location using Surfshark’s free tool here .

  • VPNs, such as Surfshark, help to show a different location.
  • Yes, using a VPN allows you to virtually change your iPhone location without physically changing your location
  • Surfshark shows if your VPN is working and protecting your iPhone activity on the main screen
  • You can also manually check an IP address on Surfshark’s website
  • Yep, it is legal.

how to change ip address on your iphone

Surfshark stands out as one of the best VPN providers due to its award-winning service, unlimited simultaneous connections, and advanced VPN features. From WireGuard and IKEv2 to Open VPN protocols, Surfshark has the features everyone needs to create the ultimate digital defense network.

Although Apple created a robust private architecture, adding a VPN on iPhone or iPad adds extra protection.

Why is an iPhone VPN needed?

The rise of cybercrime threatens your mobile data as you use your devices out in public. The warning to never connect to a public Wi-Fi network rings in our ears, but with an iPhone VPN app you can put those fears to bed.

A VPN is the best way to encrypt your internet traffic, allowing you to stay secure while roaming the internet on unprotected networks. Using a VPN also allows you to access geo-restricted content, like TV shows and sporting events.

A VPN is also a must-have when traveling, as you never know when you might encounter censored websites. Plus, avoid price hikes based on your browsing history by using a VPN that masks that activity.

How to set up a VPN configuration on iPhone

Now that you know why an iOS VPN app is so valuable, let's cover how to get one installed on your iPhone. First, you want to buy a Surfshark VPN subscription from their website. You could go with a monthly plan, but those are pretty pricey.

A smartphone and laptop displaying VPN connection statuses with a stylized abstract background.

Instead, we recommend you go with a longer-term option, like the 12-month or 24-month options. These longer terms make it as little as $2.39 per month, and the most popular option, Surfshark One, is only $3.06 per month at the 24-month level, which also gives you 79% off and 2 months free .

With your Surfshark subscription purchased, let's go through the steps to get your VPN app for iPhone activated and your browsing traffic protected.

5 easy steps

  • Download the Surfshark iOS app from the App Store.
  • Log into your account (or purchase a subscription from inside the app, then log in).
  • Once logged in, you can connect for the first time. You will get a pop-up that tells you VPN configurations must be downloaded to your device. Tap allow for your iPhone or iPad to receive these configurations necessary for a successful connection.
  • Tap Quick Connect to automatically connect to the fastest Surfshark server, which is usually the closest one to your real location. However, you can manually select a server based on your needs.
  • You will receive a notification once the connection to the server is successful. On the dashboard, you'll also see a Connected and Safe banner to signify the connection is live.

The steps for setting up the Surfshark VPN are the same on the iPad, making it straightforward to set up a secure connection on Apple devices. Likewise, once the connection is active, you can manage server locations and access additional features.

Pick from 3,200 server locations worldwide

With 3,200 servers worldwide, Surfshark users can find the VPN server that's right for them based on their location and content desires. Flag your favorite locations with the star icon to the right of the server location for quick access whenever you need it.

Screenshots of a VPN service interface showing a connected status with details and a server selection menu on a smartphone display.

Once connected to your desired VPN server, you can adjust your IP address settings. For example, selecting Static IP will give you the same IP address each time you connect, while Multi-Hop connections will route traffic through two servers.

You can also choose Dedicated IP, which is a separately purchased dedicated IP address unique to you as a user. Finally, a Surfshark One subscription provides additional features to keep you safe.

Other security tools include:

  • Surfshark Alert - Receive alerts when personal information gets leaked.
  • Alternative ID - Generate a new identity and email to use online.
  • Surfshark Search - Free yourself from the Google Search tyranny.

The Surfshark app is the centralized hub to access and change any of these settings, making it easy for everyday users to customize their VPN connection.

How to test if a VPN connection is working on iPhone

While using a VPN for iPhone is a practical solution for hiding your browsing traffic or accessing blacked-out content, there are times when it doesn't work properly. You might also need reassurance that the VPN connection is secure and working so credit card or personal information remains encrypted.

Illustration of a Surfshark VPN interface on a desktop with status indicators and account options.

Luckily, there are a few tests you can run to ensure everything is secure from end to end. These tests include IP address leak testing, DNS leak testing, and WebRTC leak testing. The first indicator that everything is secure is the Surfshark app's homepage, which will say Connected and safe at the top.

Test your IP address for leaks

Your IP address traces your web activity back to you as a user. To perform an IP leak test, follow these steps:

  • Navigate to the Surfshark IP leak test page .
  • Under the IP address checker, you'll see a box with details on your connection. A protected connection will show a protected status, along with the Surfshark logo, IP address info, and server location.

Verify your DNS numbers are free from leaks

DNS numbers further identify users and devices, leading your traffic right to your private data. A DNS leak test is similar to the IP leak test:

  • Switch the tab from the IP leak test to the DNS leak checker from the previous testing page.
  • The DNS tester will also signal protected, along with your IP address and server location.

WebRTC leaks revealing your IP addresses

Finally, on the same Surfshark test page, you can test for WebRTC leaks. A WebRTC leak is when your browser connects to chatrooms or other live information transfers, creating an environment that exposes your IP address. Here's how to check for a WebRTC leak:

  • Switch tabs once more to the WebRTC leak checker.
  • You will see once more a protected status indicator, an IP address, and status.

However, you can take your testing one step further to confirm a WebRTC leak. To do this, follow these steps:

  • Disconnect from your VPN.
  • Go to Google and search "What is my IP address?"
  • Write down the IP address listed.
  • Close the webpage and reconnect your VPN.
  • Search Google again. If your IP address is the same as it was previously, you have a leak. Otherwise, you're good to go.

If you have a leak, that means your VPN isn't protecting you completely. You should troubleshoot your VPN settings, ensure that you connect to a Surfshark server, or restart your device to prevent any precious data from landing in the hands of cyber thieves.

Surfshark VPN service keeps you protected regardless of which network you use

An iPhone VPN should be a necessary piece of network protection everyone should use regardless of the types of networks they connect to. Additionally, a premium VPN provider guides iPhone users on how to set up a VPN via step-by-step instructions to make the process easy.

The best iPhone VPN services unlock blacked-out content, skirt website censorship, and protect your browsing data. While it seems like it would be a challenging tool to use, in reality, setting up a VPN is pretty straightforward.

Likewise, verifying that your VPN is working requires you to visit only one website, and you can check between IP address, DNS, and WebRTC leaks. When you use Surfshark, you can rest easy knowing your data is secure and your VPN iPhone app has your back.

VPN for iPhone FAQs

When using a VPN on your iPhone mobile device, there are often some questions that pop up. Here are a few common ones and their answers.

Should I keep a VPN provider on?

While your home Wi-Fi internet connection is likely secure, it's a best practice to keep your VPN on whenever you use your computer. A VPN adds extra layers of security to ensure your private information and browsing data remain secure.

Does the iPhone have a built-in VPN server?

iOS devices, like the iPhone and iPad, have built-in VPN support. However, without the help of premium VPN mobile apps like Surfshark, you'll need to know the manual details of the server you want to connect to.

Unfortunately, when you connect to a server using manual native support, you miss out on the other great functionality the best VPN iOS apps can provide, like instant server switching capability, a kill switch feature, and customer support.

Are VPNs dangerous for iPhones?

The entire point of deploying a VPN service for iPhone is to make the device more secure. The only way it would be dangerous to utilize a VPN provider is if you work with a shady, untrustworthy entity or an unknown free VPN service.

When you use Surfshark, you don't have to worry about harmful changes to the network settings on your device. Plus, Surfshark has a robust Help site and guides to answer any issues you come across.

How to Find and Change the IP Address on Your Mac

Quick links, how to find your ip address on a mac, how to change the ip address of your mac, how to set a manual ip address on macos, ip address conflict troubleshooting, public vs. private ip addresses on mac.

  • You can find and change your Mac's IP address through the Network panel in System Settings or by using Terminal commands.
  • Changing your IP address can help resolve network conflicts, such as when you receive an "another device is using your IP address" message.
  • If you set a manual IP, it's important to reserve this in your router to make sure your Mac consistently uses the same address.

Need to double-check your Mac's IP address or adjust it to avoid a network conflict? We'll show you how to easily find and change the IP address of your Mac.

The easiest way to check your Mac's IP address is through the Network panel in System Settings . Click the Apple menu in the top-left of your screen and choose System Settings to open it, or use Cmd + Space to search for "settings" with Spotlight.

Here, click Network from the left sidebar to open the relevant menu. Your current network shows at the top, with a green Connected dot—this is Wi-Fi , assuming you're using a wireless connection. Click the one you're using.

On the resulting page, you'll see the name of your current network at the top. Click the Details button next to this to open a new window with full information about the network.

There, you'll see an IP address field, which displays the current private IP address of your Mac on your network. For convenience, the Router 's IP address is also shown. You can select these addresses to copy and paste them elsewhere.

View Your Mac's IP Address Through the Terminal

The above method is quick and reliable, but you can also see your Mac's IP address using a Terminal command if you don't want to click through multiple menus. Open Terminal by searching for it on Spotlight ( Cmd +Space ).

Next, enter the following command to show your IP address on a Wi-Fi connection:

For an Ethernet connection, use this command instead:

Either way works; if you can memorize this handy Terminal command , it's a bit faster than clicking through the System Settings menus.

While viewing your computer's IP address is enough in some cases, what about when you need to get a new IP address on your Mac? This is necessary if you see the "another device is using your IP address" message, though you can change your IP address for other reasons too.

To change your Mac's IP address, head back to the same Network menu mentioned above. On the window where you confirmed your Mac's IP address, click the TCP/IP menu on the left. This shows more details about your Mac's current network connection. Next to Configure IPv4 , you'll probably see Using DHCP .

DHCP, or Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol , allows routers to automatically manage IP addresses. This is why when you connect a new device to your network, you don't have to manually select an open IP address for it.

To get a new IP address from your router, click the Renew DHCP Lease button. This will result in your computer releasing its IP address and getting a new one, which should resolve any duplicate IP errors.

If you want more control over your Mac's network settings, you can assign an IP address manually (also called a static IP). With this option, the specified address will not change for your device, which can further help resolve issues with duplicate IP addresses.

To set a static IP address on your Mac, return to the TCP/IP tab mentioned above. In the Configure IPv4 field, click Using DHCP and change it to Using DHCP with manual address .

You can also choose Manually if you want. However, the former option is more convenient as it only has you specify the IP address, so you don't need to confirm other information like your router's IP.

Finding an Unused IP Address

When setting a manual IP, you'll need to choose an IP address that isn't already in use on your network. Otherwise, you'll create a duplicate IP problem. While you can log into your router to check IP addresses in use , it's faster to check for an open one using the Terminal.

To do so, you first need to know the IP format of your network. You'll find this on the TCP/IP tab visited earlier—the address of the Router is the format your network uses. This is often 192.168.0.X (with the last digit being unique to each device) but you should double-check what yours is.

Once you know, use Cmd + Space to open Spotlight and search for Terminal. Then enter the following command to ping an address and see if it exists on your network, replacing the address with one you want to use:

If this results in something like 64 bytes from 192.168.0.102 followed by other information, that means a device with that address exists on your network and is responding to your ping. Don't use that address for your Mac; try the ping command again with a new address until you find one that's available.

If you have lots of devices on your network, you might wish to use the arp -a command to filter out unavailable options. This displays all IP addresses on your network at once, showing what's already in use.

When your ping to an IP repeatedly shows Request timeout , you've found a free address. You can enter that IP address in the IPv4 Address field of the Network settings page. Once you do this and confirm with OK , your Mac's IP address will stay the same unless you change it.

Reserving a Manual IP in Your Router

For best results, when you set a manual IP address on your Mac, you should also reserve that address in your router. That way, your router knows that your Mac expects to always use the same address.

To open your router's management panel, open your browser and type the IP address that appears next to Router in the TCP/IP panel you used earlier. You'll then need to log in with your router admin and password, which is different than the password you connect to Wi-Fi with.

If you've never logged into your router before, check Routerpasswords.com to find the default for yours, then be sure to change it for security. And if you're not familiar with working in a router, you may want to read our general router introduction first.

IP address reservation options will differ slightly depending on your router. On my ASUS router, for instance, the relevant menu is under LAN > DHCP Server . Turn Enable Manual Assignment on, then in the box below, you can select a device and reserve an IP address for it. You don't need to change the DNS Server , but you may want to set the Host Name , Description , or similar box to remember what's what.

Given that the router identifies devices by MAC address (not related to the Mac platform), you'll need to pick out your Mac from the list. I've previously named my devices (under Network Map ) to make them easier to identify. If you're not sure which item is your Mac, you'll need to find your Mac's MAC address manually.

See our guide to static IP addresses for more help.

If you needed to change your Mac's IP address because you saw an "another device is using your IP address" error, resetting and renewing your IP address or assigning a manual IP should have fixed the problem. If not, we have a guide to fixing IP address conflicts that you should consult next.

No two devices on your network can have the same address, since your router won't know which is which. This is why you see this message, which shouldn't happen unless your router is acting up or you've manually assigned a duplicate address.

However, it can also happen if a computer is in hibernate mode for a long time; when it wakes up, it might have an old IP address that your router has since assigned to something else. In that case, releasing and renewing the address as described above should fix it.

Finally, we should quickly mention the two different kinds of IP addresses for clarity.

Everything we discussed above pertains to private IP addresses, which are used only on your network. Most home networks use the same range of addresses (often starting with 192.168.0.X ), but those values are only used by your local network. A manual (or static) private IP makes it easier to locate devices on your network by their IP addresses.

In contrast, your public IP is what the rest of the internet sees when any device on your network goes online. While you can pay your ISP for a static IP address, a dynamic public IP is fine for most people. Your public IP doesn't affect the "another device is using your IP address" error that you might see on your Mac.

To find your public IP, simply Google "what is my IP address" or visit a site like MyIP.com . We've compared public and private IPs if you'd like more info. And if you want to change your public IP, try one of the best VPN services .

We've looked at how to view your Mac's IP address, as well as changing it if needed. In most cases, you can rely on DHCP and don't need to manage IP addresses manually. While setting addresses by hand does have its uses, the increased overhead isn't worth it unless you're doing so to troubleshoot a problem.

How to Change App Icons on Your iPhone's Home Screen

Are you looking to personalize your iPhone's Home Screen beyond the standard layout? Changing app icons is a creative way to customize your device's appearance and make it uniquely yours. Whether you're aiming for a themed aesthetic or just want to refresh the look of your most-used apps, altering app icons on your iPhone is a simple yet effective way to revamp your Home Screen.

ios 15 home screen icons yellow

Once you have your icon image, it's time to make use of it. The following steps explain how you can add a custom icon for any app. The process effectively involves creating a Shortcut to open an app, and then adding an image to that Shortcut so that it appears the way you want it to look on the Home screen.

How to Change an App's Icon With Shortcuts

Shortcuts can be a complex app to use, as it allows users to create multi-step processes to run on their device, but when it comes to changing up app icons, it's a really simple procedure.

  • Launch the Shortcuts app on your iPhone or iPad, then tap the + icon in the top-right corner of the screen.
  • Tap Add Action , then use the text field to search for Open App .
  • Select Open App .

shortcuts

  • Use the search field to find the app you want to change the icon of, then select it in the list.
  • Tap the down facing chevron at the top next to "Open App".

shortcuts

  • Tap the placeholder picture icon on the left.
  • From the drop-down menu that appears, select Take Photo , Choose Photo , or Choose File , depending on where your replacement app icon image is located.
  • Select your replacement image.
  • In the text field, rename the app as you want it to appear on the home screen.

shortcuts

Your Shortcut has now been created. You'll be returned to the home screen where you should see the shortcut in the next available space.

If you already had the app on your home screen, you will now have two different icons for it. In order to keep only your newly-created icon, simply move the old icon to the App Library . To do so, long press on the icon, tap Remove App , then choose Remove From Home Screen . Note: You must not delete the original app.

Since this process can be quite time-consuming, especially when it includes finding or making custom icons, you likely won't want to do it for every app. But if you have the time and patience, what's stopping you?
