How to add custom ringtones to your iphone.

Everyone will be jealous of your sick beats! ... Okay, maybe not, but at least you'll enjoy them.

Read update

Quick links, step one: get itunes, step two: choose a sound file, step three: convert the mp3 to aac, step four: rename your aac file, step five: add the ringtone file to your phone, step six: choose the ringtone, key takeaways.

  • To add a custom ringtone to your iPhone, convert the audio file to AAC, ensure it is less than 40 seconds long, and rename the file extension to ".m4r"
  • Connect your iPhone to your PC, click the phone icon, open the "Tunes" tab, then drag the audio file into the window
  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone, then navigate to

The iPhone has been around for a long time, and yet there's still no easy way to add your own custom ringtones — but it is possible. If you don't want to buy ringtones or use the ones that came with your iPhone, you can create your own with iTunes.

This process changed a bit with iTunes 12.7 and subsequent releases. The "Tones" library you could previously sync with your iPhone has been removed, but you can still manually place ringtone files on your phone. Any ringtones you had stored in iTunes are now located at C:\Users\NAME\Music\iTunes\iTunesMediaTones on a Windows PC or ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Tones/ on a Mac.

You almost never have to use iTunes with a modern iPhone , but adding your own custom ringtones still requires it.

On a Windows PC, you'll need to install the latest version of iTunes from Apple. On a Mac, iTunes is already installed and ready to go. This process will work on either a Mac or Windows PC.

Apple no longer offers iTunes on Macs starting with macOS Catalina, so you'll need to use an alternative method to get custom ringtones onto your iPhone on newer versions of macOS . The instructions in this article still work if you're using iTunes on Windows or if you have an older version of macOS that still has iTunes. Additionally, we had some issues with the version of iTunes downloaded from the Microsoft Store, but the version available for download on the Apple website worked perfectly. If you encounter problems, try installing the version downloaded from Apple.

Of course, you'll need a sound clip you want to convert and use as a ringtone for this. You probably already have some idea of what you want to use. if not, go ahead and find something you like. You can use absolutely any sound file you find.

Your ringtone file must be a maximum of 40 seconds long. iTunes will refuse to copy ringtones longer than 40 seconds to your phone.

If the file is long and you just want to use one part of it, you can cut it down to just the part you want using an audio editor. You can use any audio editor you like. We like the free and open-source Audacity audio editor for audio editing, but it's more complex than necessary for simple things like this — so we actually recommend a simple online tool like mp3cut.net . To use this website, click the "Open file" button and browse to the MP3 or other type of sound file you want to edit. It can also extract the sound from video files if you upload those.

Click

Select the part of the audio file you want to use and click the "Save" button.

Select the portion of the audio file you want, then click

Download the edited clip to your PC by clicking "Save" again. This is the file you'll need to import into iTunes.

Click

There's a good chance your sound file is in MP3 format. You'll need to convert it to AAC format to use it as a ringtone. (If your sound file is already in AAC format or has a .m4r extension, you can skip this part.)

First, add the sound file to iTunes and locate it in your library. You can do this by dragging and dropping the file directly into the iTunes library. Look under Library > Songs for the file afterward.

Drag your audio file into itunes.

Select the sound file in iTunes and click File > Convert > Create AAC Version.

Navigate to File > Convert > Create AAC Version.

You'll end up with two copies of the same song file in your iTunes library: The original MP3 version and the new AAC version.

To keep track of which is which, right-click the headings in the library and enable the "Kind" column.

Enable the "Kind" column, which lets you sort files by file type.

You'll see a new "Kind" column telling you which file is which. The "MPEG audio file" is the original MP3, while the "AAC audio file" is your new AAC file. You can right-click the MPEG audio file version (that's the MP3) and remove it from your library if you like.

Both AAC and MPEG versions are present.

You now have your ringtone file as an AAC file. However, you need to change its file extension so iTunes will recognize it as a ringtone file.

First, drag and drop the AAC file from the iTunes library to your Desktop or any other folder on your system.

Drag the AAC version of the file to your desktop, or any other folder you want.

You'll get the ringtone file as an AAC file with the .m4a file extension . If you don't see an extension after the file name, you'll need to enable file extensions . Right-click the file, click "rename" or hit the rename button , and change the file extension to .m4r. For example, if the file is named Song.m4a, change it to Song.m4r.

Change the file extension to .m4r.

Finally, connect your iPhone to your PC or Mac with its included USB-to-Lightning cable — that's the same cable you use to charge your iPhone.

Some cheap cables may support charging but not data transfer. If you plug your iPhone into your PC and it starts to charge but nothing else happens, try a different cable.

Unlock your iPhone and tap the "Trust" option on its screen to confirm you want to trust your computer if you haven't previously connected your phone to iTunes on that PC or Mac. You'll be prompted to enter your PIN.

Tap

In iTunes, click the device icon that appears to the left of "Library" on the navigation bar.

Click the device icon.

Click the "Tones" section under On My Device in the left sidebar.

Go to the tones folder.

Drag and drop the .m4r ringtone file from its folder to the Tones section in iTunes.

If drag and drop doesn't work, use copy and paste instead. Select the ringtone file in File Explorer and press Ctrl+C, or right-click it and select copy. Next, click inside the Tones list inside iTunes and press Ctrl+V to paste it. Additionally, this part seems to break with the Microsoft Store version of iTunes. If you can't drag and drop or copy and paste the file into iTunes, try downloading and installing iTunes from Apple's website instead. Scroll about halfway down Apple's page until you see "Looking for other versions?" and then click "Windows." Click "Download" once the option appears.

Drag and drop (or copy and paste) the ringtone you made into the tones folder.

iTunes will sync the ringtone to your phone and it will immediately appear under Tones here.

The new ringtone should sync immediately.

You can now grab your iPhone and head to Settings > Sounds & Haptics, then tap "Ringtone."

The

Then choose your custom ringtone. Any custom ringtones you've added will appear at the top of the list, and all of the default ringtones will be listed below the small line.

A custom ringtone on an iPhone.

You can also assign that ringtone to a specific contact , so you know who's calling just by the sound.

To remove ringtones, reconnect your phone to iTunes and head back to the On My Device > Tones section. Right-click a tone and select "Delete from Library" to remove it from your device.

If you want to remove the ringtone, right click and click "Delete from Library."

If you're not short on space, there isn't any real need to delete the ringtones you add. You can have as many as you'd like!

What to Know

  • The simplest way to add new ringtones to your iPhone is to buy them from the iTunes Store app, but it isn’t free.
  • You can set up custom ringtones using audio clips from Apple’s Music app on your Mac computer.
  • You can also create clips using downloaded audio files in the Garageband app instead.

This article explains how to set custom ringtones on your iPhone.

How Do I Add a Custom Ringtone?

The simplest and fastest way of using custom ringtones on your iPhone is through official channels. Which is to say you pay for and download the ringtones you want directly to your iPhone from the iTunes Store app.

You'll need to ensure the iTunes Store app is installed on your iPhone before attempting anything from this section. If it's not, you can get the iTunes Store app in the App Store .

Open the iTunes Store app.

Tap More in the bottom right corner of the screen.

Tap Tones at the top of the menu.

The store includes several categories of potential tones, from music to film to sound effects. You can find what you want by browsing through the hi-lighted categories on the main page.

Or tap Genres at the top of the screen to pull up a list of all available genres (Alternative, Comedy, Dialogue, Sound Effects, etc.) and find the category that suits your needs best.

Each genre has sub-categories like New & Noteworthy , What’s Hot , and More to Explore .

Tap See All in the corner of a sub-category's associated window to explore it further.

Alternately, you can tap Search at the bottom of the screen, type in a specific title or topic, and then scroll through the results until you get to the Ringtones section.

Tap on a tone to view more details.

Tap on the tone’s name (displayed in blue) to listen before purchasing it. Or you can tap on the ringtone’s icon when in the main menu to listen to it instead.

When you’ve found the tone you want, tap the price .

A menu will appear, giving you the option to Set as Default Ringtone , Set as Default Text Tone , or Assign to a Contact . Or if you’d rather download the ringtone and not choose right away, tap Done .

A confirmation box will appear, displaying your total cost. Tap Purchase to confirm or Cancel if you’ve changed your mind.

Open your iPhone’s Settings and tap Sounds & Haptics to assign your ringtones.

Scroll down the menu to SOUNDS AND VIBRATION PATTERNS , then select the sound you want to change (in this case, Ringtone ).

Scroll through your RINGTONES list and tap the one you want to use. The ringtone will play as a preview once selected.

How Do I Put Custom Ringtones on My iPhone for Free?

You can convert songs you already have in iTunes into ringtones, but if you’re using a newer version of macOS (anything from 2019’s Catalina and up), you won’t have access to iTunes at all. Instead, you can use Music .

You must use the Music app on both your Mac to follow these steps, but you do not need to have a subscription to complete this process.

Open the Music app.

If the song or sound you want to use is already in your library, you can find it in one of the categories under Library on the left side of the screen.

If you want to use a file that isn’t loaded into your library yet, click File and then Import . Or press Command O .

Navigate to the file you want to add, select it, then click Open . You can also click on the play button on the file’s icon to listen to a preview to ensure it’s the one you want.

You’ll find the newly added file under Recently Added .

Right-click on the song and select Get Info .

Click on the Options tab in the menu, then enter the times you want the clip to start and stop in their respective boxes. Be aware the total time for the clip cannot exceed 30 seconds.

Click OK to finalize your selection.

From the clip’s info page, click on the clip to select it, then at the top of the screen, click File > Convert > Create ACC Version .

The 30 second clip will appear on the list underneath the original clip.

Once created, you’ll want to follow steps 6 through 9 to restore the original clip to its proper length. Just make sure both the Start and Stop boxes are unchecked, and it should default back to normal when you click OK .

Right-click on the 30-second clip and select Show in Finder to find the actual file on your computer. It should be using a “.m4a” file extension.

Right-click the file and select Rename .

Give the file any name you want, but make sure to change the extension from “.m4a” to “.m4r” to make sure your iPhone will recognize it .

Connect your iPhone to your Mac using the necessary Lightning or USB cable, then in Music, select your iPhone and click Sync Settings .

On the General tab, make sure Manually manage music, movies, and TV shows is on and click Apply to finish.

Go back to the folder where the new clip .m4r file is, then drag and drop it into Music , making sure your iPhone is still connected to your computer, and it’s still selected in the Music app.

The new ringtone may not appear on your iPhone’s page in Music , so go into Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone to check.

The new ringtone should appear right at the top of your list. Tap it to set it as your new ringtone, and you’re done!

How Can I Put Ringtones on My iPhone Without iTunes or Music?

Provided you already have music files you want to use or have some in mind you want to download, it’s also possible to set them up as ringtones on your phone without using iTunes or Music . First, you’ll need to download or transfer the music files to your phone with the Files app to make it work.

You’ll need to download and install both the Garageband app and the Files app from the App Store on your iPhone to follow these steps.

Open Garageband and tap Audio Recorder .

Tap View (the icon looks like a small series of horizontal lines towards the top-left of the screen).

From the new screen, tap Loop (which looks like a small loop, close to the top-right corner of the screen).

From the Files tab, tap Browse items from the Files app .

Select the file you want to use, and you’ll be taken back to the Files tab, where the selected file will now appear.

Tap and hold the song for a second or two, and it will import to Garageband .

Tap and drag along the lined bar at the top of the screen (beneath the Play and Record buttons) to set the starting point for your audio clip. Be aware the final audio clip you use for a ringtone will have to be less than 30 seconds long.

Double-tap the audio clip, tap Split and drag the scissor icon down to cut the clip at the line.

Double-tap the portion of the clip you don’t want to use and select Delete .

Tap the down arrow in the top-left corner of the screen and select My Songs .

Your clip will appear on the new screen, most likely with the title “My Song.”

Tap and hold the clip to pull up a menu, then scroll down and select Share .

Select Ringtone , then Continue .

Tap Export in the top-right corner of the screen, and Garageband will begin exporting the new ringtone for you.

Tap OK to continue, or Use sound as if you want to use the new ringtone for something specific.

If you choose the latter, you can set the new clip as a Standard Ringtone , a Standard Text Tone , or Assign to contact .

Otherwise, you can go into your iPhone’s Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone to set your new ringtone manually. It will appear in the list alphabetically as “My Song” if you didn’t change the name or under whatever name you decided to give it in Garageband .

How to set a ringtone on iPhone and how to find new ones

Leave silent behind. Here's how to set a ringtone on iPhone

A person holding a blue iPhone 13 in both hands

If you're wondering how to set a ringtone on iPhone, you're in the right place. While many of us choose to keep our phones on silent most of the time, myself included, there are often scenarios when the old-fashioned loud way just can't be beat.

If you're expecting an important call, have a busy work line or simply like hearing your phone ring, you'll of course need to be able to hear your phone ringing at all times, which means you're best off having it on loud. The thing is, if you haven't already changed it, your ringtone is probably the dull, boring Reflection tone that the iPhone ships with, and that's not cool or unique at all. Furthermore, if loads of other people also have that tone set, how can you always be sure it's your phone that's going off? You can't be.

What could be better then, than ditching the stock iPhone ringtone in favor of a cheesy synth cover of Never Gonna Give You Up or Dragostea Din Tei? That's right: nothing. So, without further ado, here's how to set a ringtone on iPhone and how to find new ones.

How to set a ringtone on iPhone and how to find new tones

  • Open Settings and tap Sounds & Haptics
  • Tap Ringtone
  • Tap a pre-installed tone to set it as your ringtone, or
  • Tap Tones Store and find a new ringtone

5. On the Tones homepage, tap Genres to browse for a ringtone by music type, or search for a song directly .

6. When you've found a song, tap the price to purchase it. You'll be offered the choice of setting it as your default ringtone, text tone or to assign it to a contact. Tap your preference and then tap Done . Follow the confirmation steps to verify the purchase and enter your Apple ID password if necessary.

7. You should now see the newly-downloaded song ready to be set as your ringtone in the Ringtone menu. Tap the song to set it as your ringtone.

Tired of missing important calls from friends and family? There are many reasons why your iPhone isn't ringing when it's supposed to, but they all have very simple fixes! This wikiHow article will show you why your iPhone isn't ringing, and how to make sure you never miss an important call again.

Check the Silent switch.

Look at the narrow switch on the top-left side of your iPhone.

Increase the ringer volume.

A too-quiet ringtone could result in many missed calls.

  • If you often use your iPhone in a louder environment, some of the more mellow ringtones might not break through the noise. Tap Ringtone and try selecting a different sound.
  • If you're using a custom ringtone that you created or downloaded, there could be a problem with the file. Try switching to one of the built-in ringtones to see if that fixes the problem.

How to change the ringtone on your Android phone

A recent discussion among friends wondered if anyone really used ringtones anymore. The idea was that most people (those who still use their phones to hold verbal conversations) either go with whatever ringtone their phone comes with or just use vibrations.

Once upon a time, ringtones were a thing. You could use them for amusement. (My favorite was a bored voice that said, “Ring. Ring. Ring.”) You could use them to know who was calling without having to look at the phone (so you knew when to pick up and when to let it go to voicemail). Now, maybe, not so much.

Still, Google recently added a bunch of new ringtones to its Pixel phones , so presumably, some of us are still playing around with these sounds. In case you count yourself in that group, here’s how to change your ringtone, create your own, and assign a unique ringtone to a contact.

Because the methods for Samsung Galaxy phones and Google Pixel phones can vary, we’ve included directions for both. If you have a different Android phone, you should be able to use one of these as a guide.

These directions were tested using a Pixel 6 and a Galaxy S23 running Android 14.

Using a Samsung Galaxy

Change your ringtone.

  • Go to Settings > Sound and vibration > Ringtone .
  • Once you’re in Ringtone , you can choose from a wide variety of sounds. Your current volume and whether you have vibrate activated will be on top, along with Samsung’s brand sounds. If you’ve chosen a different sound, you’ll have to swipe down to find it.

Add a custom ringtone

  • Tap the plus sign in the upper-right corner.
  • You’ll see a list of all your available audio files on the Sound picker page. Select the one you want to use. A toggle above the list lets you play either the entire file or selected highlights.

Add a unique ringtone for a contact

To select a specific ringtone for one of your contacts:

  • Open the Phone app and choose Contacts from the bottom menu.
  • Select the contact you want to choose the ringtone for.
  • From the icons that appear, select the Information icon .
  • Tap the three dots labeled More and select Change ringtone/vibration > Ringtone .
  • You’ll be back on the Ringtones page; select the ringtone you want to assign to that contact.

Using a Google Pixel

  • Go to Settings > Sound & vibration > Phone ringtone .
  • Alternately, you can press your volume up or volume down key, tap the three dots under the volume indicator, tap the Settings button, and select Phone ringtone .
  • Once you’re in Phone ringtone , you can choose from a wide variety of sounds; your current ringtone will be on top. When you’ve chosen a ringtone, hit Save in the upper-right corner.

There are a number of apps available in the Play Store that will create and install ringtones for you. However, if you have an audio file of your own that you want to use, here’s how to make it available:

  • After creating or downloading the audio file, use Google’s Files app to locate it by going to Browse in the bottom menu, and then choose the Audio category. (If you use a different file app, of course you can use that instead.)
  • Find and tap the audio file.
  • Tap the three-dot menu icon in the top right and select Set as ringtone.
  • Open the Phone app and choose Contacts from the bottom menu (or simply go straight to the Contacts app).
  • From the contact page, tap the three dots on the upper right, and select Set ringtone .
  • You’ll be on the Sounds page (which is, in essence, the same as the Phone ringtone page). Select the ringtone you want to assign to that contact.
