Want Updates?

Some teachers hate 7th grade students. They claim that 7th graders are awkward, annoying, and hormonal. That may be true. Nonetheless, I've always loved my 7th grade classes more than any of my other groups. (Don't tell my 8th graders.) I love my 7th grade students because they are helpful, malleable, and are still eager to please their teachers (for the most part). You can reason with them. They can be hilarious. And they know that they're going to see you around next year, so they're not going to do anything too crazy. This page has all of my reading worksheets that were written at or around the 7th grade level. I used this awesome website to determine the readability scores of each of these worksheets, but you'll want to read and approve them yourself before giving them to your students. If you teach students who are reading at or around the 7th grade level, you've come to the right place. Surely you can find something on this page to enrich your students' literacy skills.

All about these 15 worksheets.

These worksheets are designed to help 7th grade students enhance their reading skills and comprehension abilities. The worksheets typically of passages or texts followed by a series of questions and exercises related to the reading material. The passages can cover various genres, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and informational texts.

The questions and exercises in the worksheets aim to assess students’ understanding of the reading material, as well as their ability to analyze and interpret the text. They may involve multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions, vocabulary exercises, inferential questions, critical thinking prompts, and more.

The core language arts skills that these worksheets focus on include:

Comprehension – Students are required to comprehend the main ideas, details, and supporting evidence presented in the text.

Vocabulary – Worksheets often include vocabulary exercises to help students expand their word knowledge and understand context clues.

Inferences and Critical Thinking – Students are encouraged to make logical inferences and draw conclusions based on the information provided in the text. Some worksheets include questions that require students to think critically and analyze the text’s deeper meaning or evaluate the author’s perspective.

Literary Devices – Students may be introduced to literary devices such as similes, metaphors, symbolism, and imagery, and asked to identify and analyze them within the passages.

What Reading Skills Do We Work On in 7th Grade?

A grade 7 student should be proficient in reading complex texts across multiple genres with accuracy and fluency. Their vocabulary should be extensive, allowing them to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words and phrases using context, knowledge of Greek and Latin roots, and other strategies. They should be adept at analyzing the structure of a text, understanding how paragraphs and sections contribute to broader themes and ideas. Critical thinking is vital; students should evaluate arguments and claims in a text, discerning sound reasoning from fallacious or biased points. They should be capable of comparing and contrasting multiple texts, understanding how authors approach similar themes or topics differently. 7th graders should also be able to synthesize information from various sources to form a coherent understanding of a subject or to make informed judgments.

The learning objectives for 7th grade reading comprehension typically include the following:

Reading Fluency – Develop the ability to read fluently and accurately with appropriate speed and expression.

Comprehension Strategies – Apply various comprehension strategies, such as predicting, summarizing, making connections, visualizing, questioning, and monitoring comprehension.

Vocabulary Development – Expand and strengthen vocabulary by learning new words, understanding word roots and affixes, and using context clues to determine word meanings.

Text Analysis – Analyze and interpret various types of texts, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and informational texts, by identifying main ideas, supporting details, author’s purpose, tone, and point of view.

Inferential and Critical Thinking – Make inferences and draw conclusions based on explicit and implicit information within the text. Develop critical thinking skills by evaluating the validity of arguments, analyzing different perspectives, and identifying bias or propaganda in texts.

Literary Elements – Recognize and analyze literary elements such as plot, character development, setting, theme, figurative language, and literary devices.

Text Structure and Features – Identify and understand different text structures, such as cause and effect, compare and contrast, problem and solution, and chronological order. Utilize and understand features specific to informational texts, such as headings, subheadings, captions, diagrams, tables, and graphs.

Media Literacy – Develop the ability to critically analyze and interpret media messages presented in various forms, including online articles, advertisements, videos, and social media posts.

Active Reading Strategies – Employ active reading strategies such as annotating, highlighting, note-taking, and summarizing to enhance comprehension and retention of information.

A 7th grade student can enhance reading comprehension by engaging in regular deep reading sessions, focusing on understanding rather than speed, and taking notes to capture essential ideas. They should challenge themselves by reading diverse materials, from novels to news articles, to gain exposure to varied language structures and concepts. Creating mind maps or outlines can help in organizing information, aiding in the visualization of relationships within the text. Engaging in group discussions or book clubs allows students to gain different perspectives, promoting deeper insights and clarifying misunderstandings. When encountering challenging vocabulary or concepts, it’s beneficial to research and seek external resources, like dictionaries or reference materials. It also can help to focus on periodic self-quizzing on the material, or explaining the content to someone else, can reinforce understanding and highlight areas needing further review.

Reading Skills Should 7th Graders Have Mastered by Now

Students are now in what is considered the true middle of their schooling or middle school. After at least a half of a dozen years of training their reading skills there are a number of skills that they should have conquered by this time. When it comes to reading the works of another author, they should be able to identify a theme or key concepts of what they read. Students should also be able to answer routine questions and support those answers with evidence from the text itself. When students come across unfamiliar words, they should be able to use multiple reading strategies to determine the meaning of that term. We can also expect students at this level to understand the difference between a figurative and literal meaning of a term. They should be able to identify when a writer is attempting to boast or exaggerate for affect.

When it comes to larger bodies of work such as an essay, story, or novel students are ready to begin comparing larger bodies of work. They often will do this through writing opinion-based pieces. In the realm of nonfiction, they will often cite evidence within the work itself to form an argumentative piece that takes a position and is support by evidence within the work itself.

Tips When Reading Nonfiction

Nonfiction content contains facts and information. Nonfiction can include historical events, biographies, true stories or other such related content. As kids grow up reading fiction stories and other such works, it is a little difficult for them to make up their minds to start reading a nonfiction book. It is a must for one to read nonfiction as much as possible. Nonfiction books become interesting when they capture one's attention, but the problem is that it is a little difficult to build up interest towards a nonfiction book. Following are some tips that can help one while reading to understand and enjoy nonfiction:

Understand the Central Theme

For a nonfiction book, it is always preferred to begin by reading the foreword of the book. This will help you to understand the topic and will tell you more about the central idea of the book. Also note down the most informative points of the book, this will help you to remain focused while reading.

Highlight the Important Points

Always keep colorful highlighters with you while reading. Highlight important words, sentences or any other information you find interesting. Use different colors on the same page to make your book look attractive to read.

Infer the Meanings of Words

Infer the words you do not understand, use your previous knowledge or context of the word to guess the meaning of that word. Try to correctly infer the meaning of a word and if you fail in your try, use a thesaurus to understand the meaning and note it down to help you in future.

Write an Abstract

If you want to enjoy reading nonfiction and to understand in between the lines, write an abstract. You can either write an abstract of the whole book or each chapter separately. Write the abstract neatly and keep it with you so that if you need some information in the future, you will not have to go through the whole book again.

There are a number of strategies that you can use to improve your ability to comprehend what you read. The most important thing I find is that students that are self-aware which means they understand what they do not know. When students understand what they do not know, focusing on that can be hugely beneficial for them. Taking small notes on what you read along the way, this will help remind you of the important points. Better yet, when you complete reviewing a body of work complete a graphic organizer that outlines the work itself. Make sure to be able to answer questions that anyone may ask you on the work. The more you question yourself, the more you will come away with. Make sure that you can summarize everything you read each and every time.

These worksheets contain reading assignments for your seventh grade students. What reading skills do 7th graders have.

7th grade is a crucial stage in a student's developmental cycle. They have recently finished elementary school and shifted to middle school, where the pressure has increased significantly, and they are pushed to improve constantly. In 7th grade, students are expected to learn from and utilize the information they received in prior grades by implementing it in the present time. Reading is an extremely important tool for 7th graders, which helps them in future endeavors and makes them fast learners. Continue reading this blog to understand what reading skills 7th graders should have to help them reach their true potential.

Identification and Understanding of Literary Work

As 7th Graders, students should be able to identify the main ideas of a text and explain how the narrator contributes to the themes within the text. They should be able to receive the message the author delivers and discuss various literary works by different authors. Students are expected to read different genres and review significant literary pieces.

Reading Comprehension

An essential reading skill for 7th graders is reading comprehension. Students are expected to analyze literary pieces and comprehend what the text represents. They should be able to contrast and compare one literary piece with another by looking at the tone, vocabulary, tense, punctuation, rhythm, rhyme, and sentence structure used. An important part of reading comprehension is understanding what the author means and then linking the new information with what the student already knows. For instance, if a 7th grader is reading a text about aircraft accidents, they are expected to connect the authors' message with information they already have about airplanes, significant crashes, or the dangers of flying. This integration of new information with previous knowledge through reading is reading comprehension, and that is a reading skill 7th graders have.

Discuss Literary Work Orally and in Writing

A key indicator of reading done right is when students can discuss the concept behind literary work with their peers and teachers. It allows them to use their own words to explain the text's main ideas, which helps retain that information. In both oral and written discussions, 7th graders should be able to describe a text and elaborate on its meaning using direct quotes or facts learned when reading. When students use facts or quotes from a text to support their point of view, they retain that information with greater ease due to practice.

Form a Personal Opinion

A vital reading skill for 7th graders is the ability to form a personal opinion based on the text that they have read by other authors. 7th graders are expected to construct their own opinion about the text separate from the narrator's perspective when reading. Within their opinion, they can point out whether they liked the text, how it can be improved, what they agree with within the text, and the core components of the text that they can and will use for future reference. It becomes easier to learn and retain information when you take the time to form an opinion about it; as students, forming a personal opinion about any text enables them to read between the lines and truly understand each literary piece.   Utilize Text

It is crucial to focus when reading, so the information provided in the text can be used in real life. 7th graders are expected to utilize the text and use the facts or quotes they've learned in writing. When students are able to use the text they've read in their writing, it becomes ingrained in their memory. 7th graders should be able to write about and use the material they've read in future writing assignments. For instance, if a student has read a book on emotional wellness, they should be able to incorporate the information they've been exposed to in their assignment on why mental health is important.
