Tom Brady, Michigan players post ‘Bet’ after Jim Harbaugh’s suspension: What does it mean?

Michigan Wolverines quarterback J.J. McCarthy and his teammates had a one-word response to coach Jim Harbaugh’s suspension by the Big Ten on the eve of a Big Ten showdown with Penn State .

“Bet,” McCarthy  posted on Twitter , now called X, hours after commissioner Tony Petitti announced the coach is suspended for the rest of the season in connection with an alleged cheating scandal.

HOW TO WATCH: Michigan vs. Penn State | Time, TV, Channel, FREE LIVESTREAM

University attorneys, who have filed for a court order to stop the suspension, have asked a Michigan judge for a speedy decision that would allow Harbaugh to coach against the Nittany Lions in game scheduled to kick off a little after noon Eastern. The No. 3 Wolverines (9-0, 6-0 Big Ten) face No. 10 Penn State (8-1, 5-1) at Beaver Stadium State College.

Many Wolverines players posted the same word — “bet” — while on the way to the game, including cornerbacks Mike Sainristil and Josh Wallace, guards Trevor Keegan and Zak Zinter, offensive tackle Karsen Barnhart and defensive tackle Kris Jenkins, among others. Super Bowl champion Tom Brady, a Michigan alumnus, also posted “Bet.”

What does it mean?

It might mean “bet on us” to ignore the distraction and focus on winning games and eventually a national championship — a show of unity that stresses what’s important.

According to MLive.com , Wolverines players also wore “Michigan vs. Everybody” shirts Friday while boarding the plane to Penn State, while Michigan men’s basketball coach Juwan Howard posted  “Michigan vs. Everybody” with the hashtag #isupportCoachHarbaugh.

When Harbaugh was suspended earlier in the season by Michigan for recruiting violations, McCarthy wore a “Free Harbaugh” T-shirt. Now, the coach has been banned again, but the school is fighting back.

“The harm to the university’s student-athletes would be irreversible,” attorneys for Michigan and Harbaugh said in the filing.

The university bristled that the conference issued the suspension on a Friday afternoon — only hours before the Saturday noon kickoff against Penn State, and on the Veterans’ Day holiday no less, when courts were closed. It’s unknown how soon the court will act, but Michigan is asking for immediate ruling.

“Commissioner Petitti’s hasty action today suggests that this is more about reacting to pressure from other Conference members than a desire to apply the rules fairly and impartially,” the university statement said. “By taking this action at this hour, the Commissioner is personally inserting himself onto the sidelines and altering the level playing field that he is claiming to preserve. And, doing so on Veterans Day – a court holiday – to try to thwart the University from seeking immediate judicial relief is hardly a profile in impartiality.”

'This is insanity': Urban Meyer addresses Michigan sign-stealing scandal, Jim Harbaugh suspension

synonym for do homework

When asked about Jim Harbaugh's suspension Friday and the past 24 hours for Michigan football, former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer could only find one word to use: "Insanity."

"This is insanity," Meyer said on FOX's "Big Noon Kickoff." "You have two teams playing for a conference championship, potentially a national championship. Your head coach is eight miles away. I don't put it past them to helicopter in here, to come in a parachute in the first quarter. It's insanity."

Michigan is filing for a temporary restraining order Saturday that would allow Harbaugh to coach against Penn State Saturday if granted. In the hours leading up to kickoff against the Nittany Lions, Michigan offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Sherrone Moore was named the interim head coach.

Michigan confirmed there will not be a ruling today for Harbaugh's temporary restraining order .

As for Michigan's "sign-stealing scheme," Meyer said he's "never heard of that" in his head coaching career.

"I've heard people say 'Everyone does it.' I've never heard of that in my career," Meyer said.

Meyer also said he felt the "loyalty" Michigan President Santa Ono and the administration has shown Harbaugh and the football program has been "unusual."

But on Saturday, when Michigan faces Penn State, Meyer says the Wolverines have a big advantage.

"Huge advantage Wolverines. Huge," Meyer said. "Everybody wants to coach an angry team. A pissed off team. You know what the Wolverines are? They're that. They are going to play with anger, they are going to play with motivation. I'm a little worried about the Nittany Lions with that team."

Meyer was 4-0 against Harbaugh during his Ohio State coaching career.

Michigan will kick off against Penn State just after noon Saturday on FOX.

What to Know About Trump’s Civil Fraud Trial

The former president will testify Monday in a Manhattan courtroom as he tries to preserve the business empire that made his name.

  • Share full article

Donald J. Trump speaks, gesturing with both hands, in a courtroom hallway.

By Kate Christobek

Follow live updates on the civil fraud trial against Donald Trump .

Donald J. Trump’s trial will continue Monday in a New York courtroom with him on the witness stand, part of a proceeding that threatens the business empire that underpins his public persona and that fostered his run for the White House.

The trial stems from a lawsuit brought by New York’s attorney general, Letitia James, which accuses Mr. Trump and other defendants, including his companies and sons Donald Jr. and Eric, of fraudulently inflating the value of assets to obtain favorable loans and insurance deals.

For the past five weeks, lawyers from the attorney general’s office have argued that Mr. Trump’s employees arbitrarily assigned values to individual assets to arrive at the former president’s desired net worth. Mr. Trump’s attorneys have responded that the assets had no objective value and that differing valuations are standard in real estate.

The judge, Arthur F. Engoron, ruled even before the trial that Mr. Trump and the other defendants were liable for fraud, and that their annual financial statements were filled with examples of such misconduct.

When the trial ends, Justice Engoron will decide whether Mr. Trump pays a significant penalty or is subject to any other punishment. Ms. James has asked that he pay $250 million and that he and his sons be permanently barred from running a business in New York.

Mr. Trump, a Republican, has denied all wrongdoing. After his testimony on Monday, his daughter Ivanka is scheduled to testify on Wednesday. The attorney general’s office is then expected to rest its case.

Mr. Trump’s attorneys will then present a defense. They are expected to recall many witnesses who have already testified, including the defendants, and to call their own experts. The trial is scheduled to last until Dec. 22, but may conclude before then.

Here is what has happened so far:

During the first week of the trial, Justice Engoron ordered Mr. Trump not to comment on members of the judge’s staff on social media. The admonition came in response to a post by Mr. Trump showing a picture of the judge’s clerk, Allison Greenfield, with Chuck Schumer, the Senate majority leader, mocking her as “Schumer’s girlfriend.”

A copy of the post remained on Mr. Trump’s campaign website. On Oct. 20, Justice Engoron called it a “blatant violation” and fined Mr. Trump $5,000 .

The next week, Mr. Trump told reporters outside the courtroom that Justice Engoron has “a person who’s very partisan sitting alongside him, perhaps even much more partisan than he is.” Justice Engoron fined him $10,000 .

On Friday, Mr. Trump’s legal team continued these attacks, saying communications between the judge and his clerk while court was in session created a “perception of bias” that might result in a mistrial.

A few hours later, Justice Engoron prohibited all attorneys from making statements about internal and confidential communications between him and his staff.

Engoron argued that the safety of his staff outweighed the First Amendment rights of the defendants, and wrote that his office had been “inundated with hundreds of harassing and threatening phone calls, voice mails, emails, letters and packages” since the trial began.

Arguing the Case

Twenty-three witnesses have testified, including four defendants: the Trump Organization’s former controller, Jeffrey McConney; the former chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg; and Mr. Trump’s sons. Through documentary evidence like spreadsheets and emails, the attorney general’s team has tried to show the defendants’ intent to inflate Mr. Trump’s financial statements and have financial institutions rely on them.

Mr. McConney testified that some of his valuations were the result of a mistake or oversight, but others were intentional, such as a failure to account for 12 rent-stabilized apartments in the valuation of Trump Park Avenue.

Mr. McConney said that he did not act alone. He said that he arrived at inflated values or repeated them after conversations with Mr. Weisselberg.

On the witness stand, Mr. Weisselberg acknowledged his role in some of the manipulation of Mr. Trump’s assets. He also implicated his former boss, saying that Mr. Trump reviewed the financial statements before they were made final.

Younger Trumps Testify

Both Trump sons tried to distance themselves from the financial statements. Over three days of testimony last week, the attorney general’s office tried to chip away at their claims.

Eric Trump said he didn’t concentrate on valuations, but was confronted with emails showing his active participation in the appraisal of Trump Organization assets. The attorney general’s office also tried to show that he ignored an independent estimate of the value of the family’s golf club in Westchester County, N.Y.

Donald Trump Jr. was presented with evidence to demonstrate his awareness of discrepancies in the valuations. He was shown an email he received from Forbes magazine alerting him to errors in a financial statement. But shortly after, he had told his accountants that the document contained no material misstatements.

Donald Trump Jr. was also confronted with his signature on letters in which he assumed responsibility for the financial statements, and at one point testified that he expected the company’s biggest lender to rely on their accuracy.

Do you like your cellphone? Here’s why mining should not be a dirty word in the U.S.

Panel discussions hosted by the deseret news and utah business put a spotlight on the importance of mining for the future.

Amy Joi O’Donoghue

A haul truck looms over a crew truck with a full load of copper ore waste at the Rio Tinto Kennecott Copper Mine in Herriman on Monday, Feb. 20, 2023.

Ryan Sun, Deseret News

Do you like the lights on in your home or for your cellphone to work? It is a question every citizen of the United States should be asking as it looks to a future complicated by global unrest.

Two panel discussions hosted by the Deseret News and Utah Business and moderated by Deseret News executive editor Doug Wilks explored this critical issue at the Utah Mining Association’s convention Thursday in Salt Lake City.

The debut of the Discovery Series by representatives of the two media brands took a deep dive into what not only affects Utah, but the Intermountain West and the nation as a whole when it comes to the energy we depend on.

First, what is the status of mining in the United States and what is its role in extracting critical minerals for the products we enjoy? And what is the status of power generation and the reliability of fuel production and the power grid connecting the country?

Consider this:

  • It will take up to 18 years to meet the transmission line generating capacity to match energy generation needs of retiring coal-fired or gas plants.
  • Utah has long been a net energy exporter of energy. Now it has to rely on other states.
  • The “energy IQ” of Americans is extremely low and Utah should be prepared for rolling blackouts.

Deseret News Executive Editor Doug Wilks moderates a discussion during the Utah Mining Association annual meeting in Salt Lake City on Nov. 9, 2023.

Deseret News Executive Editor Doug Wilks listens to comments by John Diasselliss of Deloitte, as Denee Hayes of Bijih Resource Consulting and Celeste Maloy, a natural resources policy expert and now a congressional candidate for Utah’s 2nd District, listen during the Utah Mining Association annual meeting and convention in Salt Lake City on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2023.

Brian Nicholson, for the Deseret News

Policies have to change, and the United States and its cabinet secretaries need better cooperation, the discussion panelists said. That is not happening.

“The current place is that we are headed for a disaster,” said Mike Nasi, a national environmental attorney and energy expert. A resident of Texas, Nasi pointed to all the breakdowns that happened in Texas following a 2021 deep freeze blackout that left 10 people dead when power abruptly went offline.

Texas is No. 1 in the country in the installed capacity for wind power, with 28,843 megawatts as of 2019, but as a percentage of its total generation, the state falls to 11th place — with coal and natural gas providing the bulk of electrical generation. Wind turbines froze in Texas in 2021, but the unprecedented deep freeze also led to the failure of natural gas plants, associated with aging infrastructure, which includes pipelines that had long been neglected.

  • Did renewable energy cause Texas grid failure? Could it happen in Utah?

Nasi said the grid failures will only get worse, and with everyone pointing fingers at each other — the government, utility providers and energy experts — the problem will not find a solution unless there is cooperation.

“It’s not resolved, and our grid operator in Texas is projecting a 16% to 20% chance that we will have rolling outages at some level this winter. And that’s why they’re out trying to get coal and gas plants out of retirement right now,” Nasi said.

  • What’s the future of energy in the West? More renewable energy, less coal, new nuclear projects

That problem with grid security is not out of the question in Utah, a state that Nasi said is a good example as it relies on an energy base load source of power that is coal. And power from coal is destined to go away under current federal regulations.

That brought this point from those on the panel: You can hate emissions, but don’t hate the fuel. The technology is there to solve the emissions problem with resolve, innovation and technology, the group said. Balance is therefore needed between all sources of energy.

So how much does your lifestyle matter?

That remans the question, panelists said.

“Since the 1980s, we’ve been an energy exporter, and now we don’t export,” said Brian Somers, head of the Utah Mining Association, adding that Utah now has to import some of its energy. “We can’t take care of our needs. And for a state like Utah that has the kind of energy resources that we do here, that is just not an acceptable situation. And it’s a problem, obviously, for our economy.”

merlin_3005454.jpg

Panelists John Diasselliss of Deloitte, Denee Hayes of Bijih Resource Consulting and Celeste Maloy, a natural resources policy expert and now candidate for Utah’s 2nd Congressional District, listen to a response by Brian Somers of the Utah Mining Association during the Utah Mining Association annual meeting and convention in Salt Lake City, Thursday, Nov. 9, 2023.

How much do you like your cellphone?

The United States used to have uranium mines and while it still does, the production is not enough to meet technology needs today. U.S. uranium supplies mostly come from foreign countries and the nation is totally dependent on that import.

When it comes to mining for those critical minerals, it is being outsourced mostly due to regulations, a lengthy and clumsy permitting process, and a clean energy agenda that fails to recognize the growing need to mine minerals domestically, panelists said. The Biden administration wants more electric vehicles, but how does the country get there without mining?

  • In the U.S., this critical mineral is found only in Utah and it matters

Consider that the cellphone of yesteryear took 20 minerals in its composition. Today, it takes 70 minerals, Somers said. That is half the periodic table. Yet such a fact is not known by a public that still thinks of mining as a dirty, dangerous endeavor, rather than the high-tech, innovative profession that panelists said currently exists.

Another challenge facing the country is the lack of human capital. There is a need for engineers and others in STEM fields to go into the mining industry. Consider that China has more than a million students enrolled in mining-related classes, pointing to a mining future to meet the high-tech needs of consumers. The United States has only about 600 students, said Denee Hayes of Bijih Resource Consulting.

The U.S. has a public relations problem. She said if you want to help the environment, go into a mining profession and make a difference.

The United States, Nasi said, also has a very low energy IQ because residents think everything just comes off the shelf and they know little to nothing about the manufacturing process and where and how those minerals are sourced from foreign countries.

  • Are children ‘dying like dogs’ in effort to build better batteries?
  • This GOP senator from Louisiana is zeroing in on human rights abuses abroad

Celeste Maloy, an attorney and public lands specialist, and candidate for the 2nd Congressional District race, stated bluntly that the country needs to decide what it wants to be.

“So what I see coming ahead is we’ve got a decision to make. Either we need to be mining our minerals, or we have decided that national security is not important to us, and we’re willing to take a nosedive on our economy because we can’t produce the things that are necessary for the lifestyle to grow accustomed to,” Maloy said.

Does it come down to the comfort of a cellphone, tablet, laptop or car because of a disengaged public that really does not know what is at stake?

Maloy stressed an old saying to illustrate that elected leaders, industry officials, energy cooperatives, residents and even the media have to be engaged to right the wrong trajectory to combat a vulnerable grid and a mineral supply chain crisis.

“If you are not at the table, you are on the menu.”

At 20 years old, golf phenom Rose Zhang has a reputation for poise under pressure—for being calm and disciplined in her approach to the game and her expectations about herself. Although known for breaking records and dominating the competition as an amateur, in June when she became the first woman in more than 70 years to win her professional golf debut, she expressed surprise: “I honestly didn’t even expect to make the cut.” After tying for third in the Maybank Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in late October, she said she just feels “really lucky,” adding: “I still have lots to learn.”

Under that demeanor is a fierce drive. “Even though I’m considered pretty mellow, pretty chill, I definitely do have a very competitive spirit,” Zhang says over video from Malaysia just before the Maybank tournament. She has admitted that as a rising star on golf’s junior circuit in Southern California, she kept her 25 or so gold medals but threw away up to 20 silver ones, because who cares about second place? “I think that fight in me, that grind, has definitely allowed me to be where I am now,” she says.
