Turnitin is an assessment management system that includes a web-based text-matching software system. Students can submit their coursework to Turnitin and lecturers can use Turnitin's Feedback Studio to grade and provide feedback on the assignments. A Similarity Report is produced by comparing the text of a student's submission against text from a wide range of electronic material including journals, websites, and other students’ work, including work from many UK universities.

Turnitin provides a report on text matches. Turnitin does not interpret the report nor dictate action in response to the report, nor does access to the software, in itself, imply any requirement to act on the report. Those questions remain properly the responsibility of the University's academic processes.

Turnitin can also be used formatively to help students learn about the importance of good academic practices and good referencing.

Contact the IT Self Service Portal to request training from the Digital Education team if you have not used Turnitin before.

  • Make sure you are using a supported browser and have configured your settings to work with Turnitin. Check out Turnitin's system requirements .
  • Never duplicate a Turnitin assignment as it will break the assignment.
  • Turnitin does not currently support Group assignments.

A Turnitin assignment has a number of benefits.

  • Students can submit from a mobile device.
  • Staff can submit assignments on behalf of students.
  • A similarity report can be generated.
  • Assignments can be submitted anonymously.
  • Marks can be revealed automatically on a particular date.

To see how Turnitin assignments compare to the other most commonly used assignment tools in Moodle use the Assignment activity selector to see details of each assignment type.

  • Assignment activity selector

It's not possible to create a group assignment on Turnitin.

It is possible to enable Turnitin on a Moodle group assignment but Turnitin should only be used to view the similarity report. Turnitin does not support group marking. You must use Moodle's grading mechanisms to provide grades and feedback.

See our guidance on Moodle group assignments for more information.

  • Create group assignment with similarity report

A matter for both Schools and for the University as a whole concerns what type of papers to submit to Turnitin. A preferable policy is to either submit all papers to Turnitin, to submit all papers for a given module/paper, or to submit a random sampling of papers (for example, 10%). It should also be made clear to students which policy is at work, and be made clear how they can access support resources both before and after any course work is due.

All Turnitin services may be unavailable for use during scheduled maintenance times. Times for these scheduled maintenance windows are the first and third Saturdays of each month .  Avoid scheduling assignment deadlines outside of core working hours. Avoid scheduling any marking on the first and third Saturdays of each month. Check the My Moodle page for information about upcoming Turnitin maintenance.

  • Turnitin system status on X (Twitter) If you are experiencing any problems with Turnitin you can check the Turnitin System Status account on X (Twitter) for information on current downtime and issues impacting on users.

Turnitin currently accepts the following file types for upload into an assignment:

  • Microsoft Word® (.doc/.docx)
  • OpenOffice Text (.odt)
  • WordPerfect® (.wpd)
  • PostScript (.ps)
  • Hangul Word Processor file (.hwp)
  • Rich text format (.rtf)
  • Plain text (.txt)
  • Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Sheets via Google Drive™
  • Adobe® PDF
  • Microsoft PowerPoint® (.pptx, .ppt, .ppsx, and .pps) (Turnitin converts the PowerPoint® slide deck into a static PDF, leaving all text and images in their original format and excludes features such as presenter notes, embedded video, and animations. Text with visual effects is not supported. Any visual effects such as shadows and 3D should be removed.)
  • Microsoft Excel® (.xls and .xlsx) (Advise students to pay attention to the image preview of the Excel file to verify that the file is presented in an acceptable manner. Students can adjust the way the file looks by editing the page setup and print area settings for the file prior to saving it and submitting it to Turnitin. If students have a .xls/.xlsx or .csv file that is 450 pages or more, save the file as a PDF for submission to Turnitin.)

Similarity Report not required

If you want to use Turnitin’s Feedback Studio for marking student coursework submitted via the Turnitin Assignment activity and you do not require a Similarity Report, you can enable the setting to Allow submission of any file type . This allows students to submit a few more file types. However, it does not cover all available file types. File types that will be accepted, in addition to the list above, when you enable the setting Allow submission of any file type are:

  • Password protected files
  • Microsoft® Works (.wps) files
  • Microsoft Word 2007 macros-enabled .docm files
  • OpenOffice Text (.odt) files created and downloaded from Google Docs online
  • Document (.doc) files created using OpenOffice, as they are not 100% Microsoft Word equivalent
  • Apple Pages
  • Spreadsheets created outside of Microsoft Excel (i.e. .ods)
  • Text with visual effects

Non-supported file types

  • Zip files. If you require students to submit more than one file you will need to set up a multipart Turnitin assignment.
  • Any other file types not listed above.

Punctuation in file names can generate errors when submitted to Turnitin. When students name their Turnitin assignment files, they should avoid using any punctuation except underscore.

When a student submits a file to a Moodle assignment with Turnitin enabled, they may receive an error message that prevents their submission from uploading successfully to Turnitin. Some of the errors such as  file exceeds maximum allowed size  and  user has not accepted end user agreement  are clear to understand and easily rectifiable by following the guidelines set in the  Submit Turnitin Assignment Guide .

There are other errors that are not so clear to understand such as:

  • problem creating the module in Turnitin (see API logs)
  • problem editing the module settings in Turnitin (see API logs)
  • no accessible content in the file pool
  • XML response could not be parsed

To rectify these errors, please try the following:

Note:  If students were required to click the submit button you will need to revert their submission to a draft. If the cut-off date in the past you will need to give students an extension to a future time to enable them to resubmit.

  • Ask student(s) to change their file name if it is over 40 characters and resubmit the file.
  • If the file name is short but students converted the assignment file from Word to PDF, we have found changing the file name and resubmitting the assignment works.
  • If the file name has any punctuation apart from underscores, ask the students to remove punctuation and resubmit.
  • If the file name & file name conventions is OK, sometimes, simply changing the file name helps push the paper through to Turnitin.

Alternatively , a staff member with the programme admin role can log in as the student to resubmit on their behalf:

  • Log in as the student for whom you want to resubmit.
  • Access the Assignment.
  • Select Edit submission.
  • Select the file from the File submissions field. An overlay window will open
  • In the Name field, update the title of the submission (any change is sufficient)

Name of assignment being edited

  • Go through all the other steps (academic integrity statements & submit & continue buttons to resubmit the file)

On submission of a Turnitin assignment, students will receive a notification to their City email stating that the file has been submitted. The full digital receipt can be viewed and printed from the Turnitin My Submissions screen. If you find you are also getting these receipts as a staff member refer to the Switch off email for Turnitin assignments guidance.

  about turnitin.

Turnitin helps instructors evaluate the originality of students’ work by comparing electronic documents to online sources and the Turnitin database. The software returns a  Similarity Report which rates submitted assignments and highlights text that appears elsewhere. Faculty can have their students submit their assignments to Turnitin, or they can use it to assess suspect submissions (e.g., assignments without works cited pages, assignments without drafts, etc.).

Note: UMass Amherst protects our students' intellectual property by storing all papers submitted by students in a dedicated database. This database is not directly searchable by other schools that subscribe to Turnitin. Only UMass Amherst faculty can search our student papers (exclusively for the purpose of grading course assignments). Instructors from other universities using Turnitin may request anonymous copies of papers which match submissions to their courses from UMass instructors.

In addition to similarity reports, the Turnitin Feedback Studio includes a set of robust tools for grading and delivering feedback to students:

  • Feedback Summary provides tools for recording voice and text comments for students.
  • Quickmarks allows for quickly adding preset and custom comments into papers.

Note : We strongly recommend using the latest version of Chrome or Firefox browsers. If you experience issues with Turnitin, please clear your browser's cache . If the difficulties persist, please try another browser.

Turnitin in Moodle Vs. the Turnitin Website

UMass Amherst instructors can use Turnitin within Moodle or they can use the Turnitin website to assess students' assignments. Both are provided courtesy of the UMass Amherst libraries, but the two methods do not work in conjunction with one another . Student assignments submitted through Moodle cannot be seen by the instructor on the Turnitin website and vice versa.

Because student enrollment and login are handled through Moodle, Turnitin within Moodle is ideal for instructors who already have a Moodle course or are teaching a large course.

The Turnitin website is more practical for instructors who wish to submit just a few suspect papers for review and do not wish to use Moodle for their course.

Get Started with Turnitin in Moodle

  • To use Turnitin in Moodle, instructors need to request a Moodle course .
  • To learn how to create a Turnitin Assignment in Moodle and read Similarity Reports, see  Add a Turnitin Assignment in Moodle or Turnitin Moodle Direct V2  guide for instructors (on the Turnitin help site).
  • Students, see Submit a Turnitin Assignment in Moodle.

Inform Your Students About Turnitin

We recommend that instructors include text in their syllabi informing students that they are using Turnitin and discuss it during their first class meeting. More generally, we also recommend that you discuss the policies covering academic honesty included in the University's Academic Honesty Policy and Procedures and the Faculty Senate's Resources for Preventing Plagiarism .

The following are sample paragraphs you may wish to include in syllabi:

If you plan to use the Turnitin similarity detection services for ALL assignments in your course...

As a condition of continued enrollment in this course, you agree to submit all assignments to the Turnitin for textual comparison or similarity review for the detection of possible plagiarism. All submitted assignments will be included in the UMass Amherst dedicated database of assignments at Turnitin and will be used solely for the purpose of checking for possible plagiarism during the grading process and during this term and in the future. Students who do not submit their papers electronically to the service will be required to submit copies of the cover page and first cited page of each source listed in the bibliography with the final paper in order to receive a grade on the assignment.

If you plan to use the Turnitin similarity detection services for selected, suspect assignments...

Students should be aware that suspect assignments (e.g., those without drafts, without works cited pages, or with large departures in style) may be submitted to Turnitin by the instructor for the purpose of checking for possible plagiarism. Submitted assignments will be included in the UMass Amherst dedicated database of assignments at Turnitin and will be used solely for the purpose of checking for possible plagiarism during the grading process during this term and in the future. Students must provide an electronic copy of their assignment to the instructor for submission to the service when plagiarism is suspected, in order to receive a grade on the assignment and to avoid possible sanctions.

Creating a Turnitin Assignment

To create a Turnitin Assignment open the course home page, after logging in as a tutor click the 'Turn editing on' button. Select 'Turnitin Assignment' from the 'Add an activity...' drop down menu.

General Turnitin Assignment settings:

  • Enter a title for the Turnitin Assignment
  • Enter a description for the assignment
  • Select the 'Submission Type' for this assignment, the first option is 'File Upload' (default) which will take doc, docx, pdf, rtf, txt and html. The second option is 'Text Submission' and the third is 'Any Submission Type' allowing submissions to be uploaded in either format.
  • Select the number of parts to be created as part of this assignment, the start date, due date and post date are given arbitary dates of one week from the time of creation. These dates should be altered as desired on the summary screen after creation.
  • Select the 'Maximum File Size' for submissions. Turnitin will allow up to 2MB for text only submissions and for text and graphic files 20MB is allowed.
  • Select 'Overall Grade' from the drop down menu. This is the final grade for the overall assignment. E.g. The assignment is to be graded as a maximum of 16 marks in total, each part can be marked out of 100 but the overall grade will be represented out of 16.
  • (Optional) Select whether or not to use Anonymous marking for this assignment (UK Only)
  • Select whether students can view Originality Reports

Advanced Turnitin Assignment settings:

  • Allow Late Submissions allows students to submit work after the due date is passed. Submissions made after the due date will be shown in the tutor in-box with the date submission in red to indicate a late submission.
  • Generate reports immediately, first report is final - Originality reports are created immediately and students may not resubmit papers. Submissions must be deleted by the instructor to enable resubmission.
  • Generate reports immediately, reports can be written until due date - The orgininality report is generated immediately. Students may resubmit as often as the student wishes up until the due date. Originality reports form the second and subsequent resubmissions will require a 24 hour delay before originality report is regenerated. Only the latest submission is available to the student and instructor. When the due date passes the originality report is regenerated and student submissions within the same assignment are included in the comparison which may result in a change to the originality report similarity index. Resubmissions are not allowed after the due date.
  • Generate reports on due date - Originality reports for submissions are generated on the due date. Resubmissions are allowed up until the due date.
  • Store Student Papers determines where the submission will be stored. Options are No Repository, Standard Repository and Institutional Repository.
  • Check against stored student papers determines whether submissions are checked against other student papers.
  • Check against internet determines whether submissions are checked against internet sources.
  • Check against journals, periodicals and publications determines whether submissions are checked against journal, periodical and publication sources.
  • Moodle Groups are not currently supported in the integration but are noted for inclusion in the development roadmap.

Once you have selected all of the required options click 'Save and Display' to be directed to the Summary screen where you will see options to configure each assignment part in more detail.

Assignment Submission Dates

After completion of the assignment settings the 'Summary' page gives you the opportunity update the assignment parts and balance the grades awarded for each part as a proportion of the overall grade. The edit the dates and grades awarded for each part click the pencil icon. The default dates for each assignment part are initially set to be one week from the date the assignment was created.

  • The Start Date determines the earliest time a student can make a submission to that assignment part.
  • The Due Date determines the date by which time the student must submit their work. If allowing late submissions submissions made after this date will be marked in red to show a late submission.
  • The Post Date determines when marks/grades will be released to students. If anonymous marking is switched on (UK only) this also represents the date when student names are revealed to the instructor.

Turnitin Class Owner

Currently within Turnitin each class is managed by a single instructor. Moodle maps all enrolled Tutors to this one Turnitin Owner in order to facilitate multiple instructor access. An instructor on the Moodle course may change this 'owner' by clicking the pencil and changing the owner. This does not effect Moodle in any way but it does allow the Owner to log in to Turnitin and see the class natively within the Turnitin web site. Multiple instructors will be supported in Turnitin in a future release at that point this feature will be removed from the integration.

Submit Paper on behalf of a Student

To submit a paper as a tutor on behalf of a student first click on the tab 'Submit Paper' then follow these steps:

  • Select the student's name from the drop down list
  • Enter a submission title
  • Select the submission part from the drop down list, if only one part is available then this defaults to the single part.
  • For a file upload, click on the Browse... button and select the file you wish to upload. Acceptable file types are doc, docx, pdf, rtf, txt and html.
  • For a text submission, enter the text into the 'Text Submission' text area.
  • Click on the 'Add Submission' button to submit the file

Viewing the Turnitin Submission Inbox

When you are logged in as a Tutor you can access the student submission inbox by clicking the 'Submission Inbox' tab.

  • The submission inbox operates in two modes depending on the number of submissions and a third mode if anonymous marking is enabled (UK only)
  • For a multi part assignment each student is listed with a summary of the submissions they have made. More information and full details of their submissions can be viewed by clicking the [+] icon to the left of their name.
  • By clicking the headings of the Student Submission, Submitted, Similarity or Grade columns you can change the submission order. By default submissions are listed in the order of Similarity Index from high to low.
  • Refresh Submissions is used to check Turnitin for any changes and updates Moodle with the latest Turnitin submission data for that assignment.
  • Enrol All Student is used to enroll all students currently enrolled on the Moodle course onto the Turnin class associated with that course. As a part of this process students will have a Turnitin account created if they do not already have one associated with their Moodle email address. If you do not want students to receive emails with log in details you must disable the 'Send Student Emails' option in the main configuration for the integration.
  • Clicking the students name in the list will open that student's Moodle profile
  • By clicking the submission title you will see the submission. If the submission has not yet been submitted to Turnitin then it will reference the uplaoded file on the Moodle server, if the file has been submitted to Turnitin it will be referenced from the Turnitin server.
  • When the submission has been uploaded to Turnitin an originality report will be generated. The Similarity Index percentage will be displayed in the 'Similarity' column when it becomes available, until the Report is available the Similarity column will display 'Pending'.
  • If Use GradeMark is enabled and set to 'Yes, use GradeMark to grade submissions' then the grade for the paper will be displayed with a GradeMark apple beside it. Clicking this apple will open GradeMark for this submission.
  • If Use GradeMark is not enabled or set to 'No, use Moodle to grade submissions' then the grade for the paper will be displayed with a pencil icon beside it. Clicking this icon will allow you to enter a numeric grade for this submission.
  • The Feedback column allows the tutor to give feedback to the student in relation to the submission. The student's inbox also provides the opportunity for the student to reply to feedback or leave their own comments.
  • The Download icon allows you to download a copy of the submission.
  • The Delete icon allows you to delete this submission.

Options Tab

  • Auto Submit can be set to 'Submit to Turnitin immediately on Upload' to upload the submission to Turnitin immediately or can be set to 'Review Upload before Submitting to Turnitin' which requires the student to click the 'Submit to Turnitin' to finalise the submission.
  • Use GradeMark can set to 'Yes, use GradeMark to grade submissions' or 'No, use Moodle to grade submissions'
  • Grade Display allows you to set whether the Grade will be displayed in the inbox as a percentage (default) or as a fraction of maximum marks e.g. 76/100.
  • Auto Refresh Grade / Scores determines whether the Grades / Originality Scores are generated automatically when you enter / re-enter the inbox or if you want to disable the auto refresh function and manually refresh submissions by clicking the 'Refresh Submissions' link.
  • Submission List lets you determine if the inbox displays only students that have made submissions or all students regardless.
  • Comments Remain Editable lets you set the window of time within which a student may edit the comments left in the feedback screen.
  • Maximum Comment Length allows you to limit the number of characters allowed in a feedback comment.
